A system includes a generator control unit (GCU). The GCU includes a saturable reactor and a rectifier. Each of the saturable reactor and the rectifier has a separate input to receive AC power from a separate respective permanent magnet generator (PMG). A method includes supplying AC power from a first permanent magnet generator (PMG) of a generator to a saturable reactor of a generator control unit (GCU) that is operatively connected to control the generator. The method includes supplying AC power from a second PMG to a rectifier of the GCU, wherein the first PMG supplies a lower AC voltage to the saturable reactor than the second PMG supplies to the rectifier.

Saturable reactors in generator control units

A system includes a generator control unit (GCU). The GCU includes a first rectifier and a second rectifier. Each of the first rectifier and the second rectifier has a separate input to receive AC power from a separate respective permanent magnet generator (PMG). A method includes supplying AC power from a first PMG of a variable frequency generator (VFG) to a first rectifier of a generator control unit GCU that is operatively connected to control the VFG. The method includes supplying AC power from a second PMG to a second rectifier of the GCU. The first PMG supplies a lower AC voltage to the first rectifier than the second PMG supplies to the second rectifier.

Electric power generation system (EPGS) controller excitation system architecture for variable frequency generators

An example aircraft electrical system includes a generator coupled with a gas turbine engine and a controller operable to distribute power of the generator. The controller includes a first control module positioned at a first location remote from the generator and a second control module positioned at a second location proximate the generator. The first control module is configured to verify at least one output of the generator, detect a fault condition of the generator, and control operation of at least one power bus in communication with the first control module. The second control module is configured to regulate the at least one output of the generator, where the at least one output includes a voltage. An example method of operating an electrical system is also disclosed.

Electrical control system

A frequency monitoring circuit includes a monitoring lead, a D-type flip-flop, and a one-shot. The D-type flip-flop has a switchable logic state, a clear input, and a clock input. The one-shot has an input and an output connected to the D-type flip-flop clear input. The monitoring lead connects the one-shot input to the latch clock input for switching the logic state of the D-type flip-flop based on change in voltage applied to the monitoring lead.
