A method for managing file based backups (FBBs) includes obtaining, by a FBB metadata file operating in a production host and from an application, a shared access request for a plurality of virtual machines (VMs) to access a FBB, accessing a FBB metadata file associated with the FBB to determine file data accessible to the plurality of VMs, performing an attribute analysis on the FBB metadata file, wherein the storage location attributes are each associated with a storage location of a portion of the file data in a backup storage system, generating a shared virtual disk in the production host based on the attribute analysis, wherein the shared virtual disk maps the file data to the storage locations, generating the plurality of VMs, wherein the VMs read from and write to the shared virtual disk, and enabling access to the virtual machines by the application.

Embodiments of the invention relate to generating backups of assets. More specifically, in one or more embodiments of the invention, the meta-data generated during the backups is leveraged for detecting cyber-attacks by leveraging backup meta-data, to reduce the amount of data that needs to be scanned by a cyber-security module to detect a cyber-attack, such as a ransomware attack. This allows any attacks to be detected earlier and reduce processing by leveraging the periodic backups that are performed as part of data protection, to detect when an attack has or is occurring. By making these determinations, a quick identification of possible ransomware attacks may be made and other methods of mitigating the attack may be deployed when the method of mitigating the attack might still be useful to mitigate potential damage to a user's data.

A method and system for shared workload anomaly detection across multiple hosts based on bare-metal recovery and/or system-state recovery data and metadata. Since at least said bare-metal recovery and/or system-state recovery metadata has information about each workload operating on one or many host(s), comparing said metadata across any set of hosts could provide the pattern of data being generated there-across. Further, other metadata generated by any shared workload instance(s), operating on a set of hosts, should be consistent across the set of hosts. Should a shared workload instance on one or more hosts generate metadata not sync with metadata generated from a baseline shared workload instance, such discrepancies could be a sign of unwanted anomalies that may warrant further analyses, alerts, etc. Embodiments disclosed herein, accordingly, propose comparing metadata from non-baseline shared workload instances against metadata from the baseline shared workload instance, in order to detect and/or resolve anomalies concerning shared workload instance behavior and/or functionality.
