A method for compensating for the absence of GPS data during a period of GPS signal loss in determining travel mileage of a vehicle includes: detecting vehicle motion using an accelerometer during a period of time in which a GPS tracking device is unable to determine a location of the vehicle due to loss of GPS signal; determining a first location of the vehicle corresponding to the last known GPS location data point stored in memory; determining a second location of the vehicle corresponding to a point at which the GPS signal is reacquired; and calculating the distance between the first and second locations based on a straight-line distance calculation between the first and second locations, or based on the use of geospatial mapping data to plot a roadway route between the first and second locations.

Error correction for GPS-based mileage tracking

An apparatus for managing information regarding an inventory of vehicles on an automobile dealership lot includes vehicle tracking devices installed in the vehicles. The tracking devices utilize a GPS receiver for generating vehicle location data and an accelerometer for generating vehicle motion data. Data from the vehicle tracking devices are received by a central server that uses the data to determine whether a vehicle is on a test drive, the identity of a salesperson who is with the vehicle, and the estimated time that the vehicle will return to the dealership. Preferred embodiments establish a geofence around the dealership location, detect when vehicles exit and reenter the geofence, and communicate the exit/return events back to the central server. The central server communicates the information to smartphones of dealership personnel to indicate availability of a particular vehicle. Some embodiments also aggregate the information from multiple sensors to report on key metrics for optimizing dealer sales performance.

The updating software may be adapted to retrieve a complementary updating component during execution of an update. The electronic device may be adapted to employ at least one of several available and retrieved complementary update components during execution of an update. In conjunction with retrieved complementary update components, the updating software may be adapted to update the firmware, the software, the operating system, and other application components while employing an appropriate update to the electronic device.

Network having customizable generators and electronic device having customizable updating software

A multiple variance platform supports device management of mobile devices in a carrier network. Applications stored in a file system residing in non-volatile memory may be updated, along with firmware code. Updates of files may be performed before file system support is provided by an operating system that enables normal operations of the electronic device. Update agent code may reside in a kernel that runs beneath the operating system, or may act as a separate entity. The non-volatile memory may comprise multiple non-volatile memory chips such as NAND-based flash memory. The firmware code may be compressed as in Linux based mobile devices.
