Techniques for providing a confidence rating for an attack technique tag and a guidance for improving the confidence rating are described. An attack technique analytics engine receives telemetry data, a notification that an attack has been detected using an attack detection source, the notification including an attack technique tag indicating an attack technique used in the attack, and attack technique data including a likelihood of a particular attack technique, from among multiple attack techniques, occurring determined using a particular attack detection source from among multiple attack detection sources. Based on the telemetry, the attack technique tag, and the attack technique data, a confidence rating that the attack corresponds to the attack technique is determined. The attack detection source and attack technique are analyzed to determine a guidance for improving the confidence rating, and the rating and guidance are appended to the attack technique tag.

Accuracy in attack technique labeling in an extended detection system

In one embodiment, a service receives administration traffic data in a network associated with a remote administration session in which a control device remotely administers a client device. The service analyzes the administration traffic data to determine whether any portion of the administration traffic data is resulting from an administration session involving a trusted administrator. The service flags a first portion of the administration traffic data as authorized when the first portion of the administration traffic data is determined to result from an administration session involving a trusted administrator, and a second portion of the administration traffic data is non-flagged. The service assesses the second portion of the administration traffic data using a machine learning-based traffic classifier to determine whether the second portion of the administration traffic data is malicious.

Automatically detecting authorized remote administration sessions in a network monitoring system

In one embodiment, a service receives captured traffic flow data regarding a traffic flow sent via a network between a first device assigned to a first network zone and a second device assigned to a second network zone. The service identifies, from the captured traffic flow data, one or more cryptographic parameters of the traffic flow. The service determines whether the one or more cryptographic parameters of the traffic flow satisfy an inter-zone policy associated with the first and second network zones. The service causes performance of a mitigation action in the network when the one or more cryptographic parameters of the traffic flow do not satisfy the inter-zone policy associated with the first and second network zones.

In one embodiment, a service receives data regarding administration traffic in a network associated with a remote administration session in which a control device remotely administers a client device. The service analyzes the received data to determine whether the administration traffic is authorized. The service flags the received data as authorized, based on the analysis of the received data. The service uses the data flagged as authorized to distinguish between benign traffic and malicious traffic in the network.

In one example embodiment, a threat detection server receives metadata of a network flow in a network; a zone definition that correlates the metadata of the network flow with a first zone of network devices in the network and a second zone of network devices in the network, where the network flow was transmitted from the first zone to the second zone; and a security policy for the network flow, where the security policy is enforced on the basis of the first zone and the second zone. Based on the zone definition, the threat detection server annotates a flow record that includes the metadata with an indication of the first zone and the second zone. Based on the annotated flow record and the security policy, the threat detection server determines whether to generate a notification associated with a detection of a security threat associated with the network flow.
