A method, apparatus and system for reducing memory latency is disclosed. In one embodiment, data between a host computer system and a memory is communicated via a port or a group of ports at the memory over multiple time intervals, wherein the host computer is coupled to the memory. Further, a command associated with the data is communicated between the host computer system and the memory via the port or the group of ports over a single time interval.

A clock and data recovery (CDR) system and method for recovering timing information and data from a serial data stream. The CDR system includes a sampling circuit that produces a recovered clock/data signal and an interleaving feedback network that provides feedback to the sampling circuit. The feedback network includes a logic circuit that produces control signals based on the recovered clock/data signal, a first multiplexer that selects from four phases of a global clock signal based on a control signal, a first delay-locked loop having a first set of delay cells coupled to a second multiplexer that produces a delayed signal based on the selected global clock signal, and a second delay-locked loop having a second set of delay cells that produces a set of phase-shifted feedback signals that are applied to the sampling circuit to phase-align the sampling circuit with the transitions in the received serial data stream.

Signal interleaving for serial clock and data recovery

A method and system for inter-port communication utilizing a multi-port memory device. The memory device contains an interrupt register, an interrupt signal interface (e.g., a dedicated pin), an interrupt mask, and one or more message buffers associated with each port. When a first component coupled to a first port of the memory device wants to communicate with a second component coupled to a second port of the memory device, the first component writes a message to a message buffer associated with the second port. An interrupt in the input register of the second port is set to notify the second component coupled to the second port that a new message is available. Upon receiving the interrupt, the second component reads the interrupt register to determine the nature of the interrupt. The second component then reads the message from the message buffer.

Inter-port communication in a multi-port memory device

A method and system for progressively reducing the power consumption of a serial memory device is provided, called the power control system. The power control system monitors the ports of a multi-port serial memory so that they can be enabled or disabled on a per-port basis. When data is not being transmitted or received on a port, a series of steps are taken to progressively de-power portions of the port and cause the port to enter into a low-power state. By disabling certain ports and placing ports in a low-power state, the power consumption of the overall serial port memory is significantly reduced.

Progressive power control of a multi-port memory device

A multi-port memory device having two or more ports wherein each port may operate at a different speed. The multi-port memory device contains memory banks that may be accessed via the two or more ports. Two clock signals are applied to each port: a system clock and a port clock. The system clock is applied to port logic that interfaces with the memory banks so that the ports all operate at a common speed with respect to the memory banks. The port clock is applied to a clock divider circuit that is associated with each port. The port clock is divided to a desired frequency or kept at its original frequency. Such a configuration allows the ports to operate at different speeds that may be set on a port-by-port basis.

Multi-port memory device having variable port speeds

A new scheme to transfer bidirectional data streams between a digital display and a computer is disclosed. This bidirectional data transfer can make several I/O devices attach to a display. Existing digital display interfaces are usually unidirectional from a computing to a display. Due to the nature of the existing clocking scheme, backward data transfer from the display side to the computer requires a backward clock. This invention discloses a scheme to send data bidirectionally without sending the additional backward clock. This invention also discloses a scheme to tolerate jitters from the clock source. With this approach, this new interface can make a digital display an I/O concentrator.

Method and apparatus for bidirectional data transfer between a digital display and a computer

A system and method for sending multiple data signals over a serial link comprises an embedding unit and a removing unit coupled by a serial line. The embedding unit preferably receives a plurality of data streams, encodes the data streams and then merges the encoded data into a serial stream that is output across a serial line to the removing unit. The removing unit receives a serial stream of data, decodes the serial stream, and then separates the decoded serial stream into separate streams thereby reconstructing the streams input to the embedding unit. The encoding and transmission by the embedding unit and the receipt and decoding by the removing unit are completely transparent, the signals output by the removing unit are identical in timing and data content to the signals input to the embedding unit. The present invention also includes a method for transmitting a plurality of data streams over a signal line, and a method for generating a plurality of data streams from a serial sequence.

System and method for sending multiple data signals over a serial link

A method and apparatus for producing a transition-controlled, DC-balanced sequence of characters from an input sequence of data bytes is disclosed herein. The bits in each of the data bytes are selectively complemented in accordance with the number of logical transitions in each data byte in order to produce selectively complemented data blocks. A cumulative disparity is then determined between the logical values of different type included within ones of the selectively complemented data blocks previously encoded into characters. In addition, a current disparity in a candidate character associated with a current one of the selectively complemented data blocks being encoded is also determined. The candidate character is assigned to the current one of the selectively complemented data blocks if the current disparity is of a polarity opposite to a first polarity of the cumulative disparity. Alternately, the complement of the candidate character is assigned to the current one of the selectively complemented data blocks if the current disparity is of the first polarity. In a high-transition mode of operation, the bits within data blocks including less than a minimum number of logical transitions are selectively complemented so that each such selectively complemented data block includes in excess of the minimum number of logical transitions. In a low-transition mode of operation, the bits within data blocks having more than a predefined number of logical transitions are selectively complemented so that each such selectively complemented data block includes less than the maximum number of logical transitions.

Transition-controlled digital encoding and signal transmission system

A new high-speed digital interface for transmitting video information over various transmission media including terminated copper wires such as twisted-pair wires and fiber optical cable is described. The significance of this new interface is that (1) it only uses a small number of data channels with all timing and control data embedded in data transmission, (2) it uses a transition controlled binary DC balanced coding for reliable, low-power and high-speed data transmission, (3) it uses low-swing differential voltage which minimizes EMI, and (4) it can be implemented in low-cost scaleable CMOS technology as a megacell or standard IC. The high-speed digital interface incorporates a method and apparatus for producing a transition-controlled, DC-balanced sequence of characters from an input sequence of data bytes. The bits in each of the data bytes are selectively complemented in accordance with the number of logical transitions in each data byte in order to produce selectively complemented data blocks. A cumulative disparity is then determined between the logical values of different type included within ones of the selectively complemented data blocks previously encoded into characters. In addition, a current disparity in a candidate character associated with a current one of the selectively complemented data blocks being encoded is also determined. The candidate character is assigned to the current one of the selectively complemented data blocks if the current disparity is of a polarity opposite to a first polarity of the cumulative disparity. Alternately, the complement of the candidate character is assigned to the current one of the selectively complemented data blocks if the current disparity is of the first polarity.
