Provided is a backlight unit, which includes at least one supporter, at least one light guide panel, and at least one light emitting module. The supporter includes a recess stepped at a lower height than that of a first region of an upper surface. The light guide panel is disposed on the supporter and is coupled to the supporter. The light emitting module is disposed in the recess of the supporter and provides light through a side surface of the light guide panel.

An optical assembly includes a plurality of light sources emitting light in a first direction at a predetermined orientation angle, and a light guide panel having a light incident section and a light emitting section. The light incident section has a first surface to receive the light emitted from the light sources in the first direction and the light emitting section is to emit light received from the light incident section in a second direction. An optical assembly is provided that may include a light emitting module that includes a plurality of light emitting devices to emit light, a light guide plate, and a side cover. The light guide plate may include at least one protrusion on a top surface of a first part of the light guide plate. Techniques for manufacturing cross-structures of nanostructures, such as nanowires and carbon nanotubes are provided. In one embodiment, a method for manufacturing cross-structures of nanostructures include providing a substrate, patterning a first mask layer on the substrate, adsorbing first nanostructures onto surface regions of the substrate where the first mask layer does not exist, removing the first mask layer from the substrate, patterning a second mask layer on the substrate to which the first nanostructures are adsorbed, and adsorbing second nanostructures onto the surface regions of the substrate where the second mask layer does not exist, under conditions effective to manufacture cross-structures of nanostructures on the substrate.

The backlight unit may include a plurality of optical assemblies, which each include a light emitting module having a substrate, a plurality of light emitting devices on a top surface of the substrate, and a connector provided on a bottom surface of the substrate and electrically connected to a power supply unit. The optical assembly may also include a light guide plate including a first part through which the light is received and a second part to output the light, which is laterally received from the first part, through a top surface thereof. A first side cover may be provided over the light emitting module and the first part of the light guide plate. A second side cover may be formed under the light emitting module and the light guide plate, the second side cover having a plurality of connector holes. The connector may be provided in one of the connector holes.
