A display region of the LCD has a low-resolution area and a high-resolution area, and a pixel formed in the low-resolution area that is larger than a pixel formed in the high-resolution area.

A substrate for a display apparatus includes a plate, a switching element, an insulating layer, and a partition wall. The plate has a reflection region on which a light that is provided from an exterior to the substrate is reflected and a transmission region through which a light generated from a backlight assembly passes. The switching element is on the plate. The insulating layer is on the plate having the switching element. The transmission region of the insulating layer is recessed when compared to the reflection region of the insulating layer. The insulating layer has a contact hole through which a first electrode of the switching element is partially exposed. The partition wall divides the transmission region into a plurality of transmission portions. Advantageously, an image display quality of the display apparatus is improved, and manufacturing cost is decreased.

The second display substrate includes a second substrate having a main pixel area where a plurality of sub pixel areas are formed, a plurality of transmission electrodes formed in the sub pixel areas and coupled with each other, and a reflection electrode arranged in at least one sub pixel area. Thus, the reflective-transmissive type LCD apparatus may prevent occurrence of the afterimage, and may enhance a contrast ratio thereof when operated in a transmissive mode.

An LCD apparatus including a first member, a second member, a liquid crystal layer and an optical film assembly is presented. A phase delay of the optical film assembly is about &#x2212;&#x3b1;. In a normally white mode, the phase delay of the liquid crystal layer is about (&#x3bb;/2)+&#x3b1; when no voltage is applied and about '&#x3b1;' when voltage is applied. In a normally black mode, the phase delay of the liquid crystal layer is about '&#x3b1;' when no voltage is applied, and about (&#x3bb;/2)+&#x3b1; when voltage is applied. The phase delay between the liquid crystal layer when voltage is applied and the liquid crystal layer when voltage is not applied is about &#x3bb;/2. &#x201c;&#x3b1;&#x201d; is a positive number. By manipulating the value of &#x3b1;, power consumption can be reduced. For example, the apparatus can be driven with a voltage below 2.5 V.

Optical film assembly for a display device

An array substrate includes a plate, a switching element, an insulating layer and a pixel electrode. The plate includes a pixel region, and the switching element is disposed on the plate. The insulating layer is disposed on the plate to include an opening for a multi-domain disposed in the pixel region and a contact hole. An electrode of the switching element is partially exposed through the contact hole. The pixel electrode is disposed on the insulating layer corresponding to the pixel region, an inner surface of the opening for the multi-domain and an inner surface of the contact hole so that the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode of the switching element. Therefore, the viewing angle and the image display quality of the LCD apparatus are improved, and a manufacturing process is simplified.

A reflective-transmissive liquid crystal display (LCD) device with an improved display quality is achieved by forming a reflective area and a transmissive area having a cell gap greater than greater than that of the reflective area. A liquid crystal layer is disposed in a liquid crystal cell between the first and second substrates. The liquid crystal molecules are normally aligned at an angle equal to greater than about 45&#xb0; with respect to a line parallel to the first substrate. The LCD device operates in a normally black mode.

Reflective-transmissive type liquid crystal display device

A display panel according to one aspect of the present invention includes a lower substrate, an upper substrate and a liquid crystal layer. The lower substrate includes a plate, a switching element, an insulating layer, a transmission electrode and a protrusion. The plate has a transmission region through which a light may pass. The switching element is formed on the plate. The insulating layer is formed on the plate to cover the switching element. The transmission electrode is electrically connected to the switching element. The transmission electrode is formed in the transmission region. The protrusion divides the transmission region into a plurality of transmission portions. The upper substrate faces the lower substrate. The liquid crystal layer is disposed between the lower substrate and the upper substrate. Advantageously, an image display quality of the display apparatus is improved, and manufacturing cost is decreased.

A liquid crystal display, in accordance with the present invention, includes a first substrate having a thin film transistor and a first electrode formed thereon. The first electrode is electrically connected to the thin film transistor. A first insulating layer is formed on the first substrate including the thin film transistor and the first electrode and a window is formed in the first insulating layer, the window exposing a predetermined region of the first electrode. A second electrode is provided on the first insulating layer and electrically connected to the first electrode. A second substrate includes a third electrode formed thereon. A first gap is formed between a surface of the third electrode and a surface of the predetermined region of the first electrode, and a second gap is formed between the surface of the third electrode and a surface of the second electrode. A liquid crystal layer is interposed between the first gap and the second gap. Other embodiments are included as well as methods for forming the liquid crystal display of the present invention.

A vertical alignment mode reflective-transmissive liquid crystal display (LCD) includes the first substrate having an upper surface and a lower surface and the second substrate having an upper surface and a lower surface and facing the first substrate. A cell is formed between the upper surface of the first substrate and the lower surface of the second substrate. The cell has a plurality cell-gaps. A vertically aligned liquid crystal layer is disposed in the cell.
