A portable terminal displays data received from the exterior or internally generated on its screen in an upright direction. The portable terminal includes a video processor, a display with the screen, a sensor, and a controller. The video processor converts data into a displayable format according to characteristics and size of the screen so the data can be displayed on the screen. The data displayed on the screen is converted according to the characteristics and size of the screen. The sensor has a sensing device for sensing rotation of the screen, and generates a sensing signal according to a rotating direction of the screen. The controller determines a rotating direction of the screen according to the sensing signal, and controls the video processor to convert a format of the data in an opposite direction of the determined rotating direction in order to display the data in an upright direction.

Disclosed is a method for performing a handoff from an async base station to a sync base station when a mobile station with async and sync demodulation modules travels from a present cell of the async base station to a cell of the sync base station, the method including the steps of: the mobile station driving the sync demodulation module for a given idle sleep time to acquire and maintain the timing of the sync base station, during an operation in the cell of the async base station; during the handoff, the mobile station measuring the strengths of pilot signals from the adjacent sync base stations based on the acquired timing, and sending the measurement results to the async base station; the mobile station receiving from the async base station information necessary to establish a traffic channel with the sync channel; and the mobile station performing handoff to the sync base station according to the information necessary to establish the traffic channel.

A power measurement means for a mobile station for measuring transmission power of a base station in an asynchronous code division multiple access (CDMA) communication systems using diversity techniques is disclosed. The power measurement means comprises scramble code generators for generating scramble codes which are allotted to each said base station, multipliers for despreading the received pilot channel signals that are spread by the scramble codes, integrators for obtaining amplitudes of the signals by integrating the despread pilot channel signals for each slot period of the pilot symbols, and outputting the amplitudes at the end time of each slot period, squarers for obtaining the power value of the signal by squaring the amplitudes, delay means for delaying the power value one slot period, an adder for adding the power value output from said squarer and the power value provided by said delay means, and switches for connecting to the adder at the end time of every two slots.
