A method, computer program product, and apparatus providing a means to split files and to merge files without the need for duplicating all of the data of the original files is disclosed.

In-place splitting and merging of files

Methods and computer program products that provide for extracting a portion of a file system for use as an independent file system and merging a file system into another file system are presented. One or more storage objects containing data from a multi-volume file system can be extracted from the multi-volume file system. One or more storage objects containing a first file system can be merged with one or more other storage objects containing a second file system, thus forming a merged file system.

Method and apparatus for splitting and merging file systems

Methods, systems, and apparatus can provide individual users of a computer system a means to share their quotas to resources accessible through that system. In one embodiment, this is accomplished, in part, by providing a shared quota descriptor understood by a file system and that can be manipulated by individual users. To that end, the present invention further provides individual users access to mechanisms by which to create and adjust shared quotas.
