A drive unit for an optical memory device includes a casing having an insertion slot which is formed in a front section and through which a medium cartridge is inserted into an interior of the casing. A front cover member movably covers the insertion slot of the casing, and includes first and second covers which are rotatable around respective first and second rotation shafts. The first front cover has a distal end which is situated on an outer side of the casing when the insertion slot is closed, the second front cover has a distal end which is situated on an inner side of the casing when the insertion slot is closed, and the second front cover is rotated with a radius of rotation which differs from that of said first front cover.

A drive unit for use in an optical memory unit has a front panel, a drive mechanism, and sealing members. The front panel has an air vent and a slot for allowing passage of a cassette case containing a disk-shaped recording medium. The drive mechanism loads the cassette case through the slot and drive the recording medium in a specified direction in order to record and reproduce information on and from the recording medium. The sealing members seals the drive mechanism nearly completely, in order to prevent migration of the outside air into the drive mechanism as the air is introduced via the air vent.

An information recording apparatus has first and second openings arranged near a field coil and flow guides beside the openings, so that an air current generated by a rotation of the medium is circulated through a space between a field coil and the information recording medium, as well as a space formed on an upper portion of said field coil. In the apparatus, an optical pick up is locked with respect to reckless stoppers with a space. Also, a field holder is arranged to be separated from a cassette case holder, but when the cassette case holder is moved in a horizontal direction and then in a perpendicular direction to be mounted on a turn table, the field holder is made to face the information recording medium. This arrangement prevents overheating and improves durability.

A bias magnetic field moving apparatus for photomagnetic recording apparatus includes an arm rotatably provided in a photomagnetic recording apparatus so that one end side of the arm can approach and separate from a photomagnetic recording medium. An arm rotating mechanism rotates the arm so that one end side of the arm may approach and separate from the photomagnetic recording medium as operatively connected with the operation of loading and unloading the photomagnetic recording medium on the photomagnetic recording apparatus. A magnetic field applying member is rotatably connected to one end side of the arm, approaching and separating from the photomagnetic recording medium as operatively connected with the operation of loading and unloading the photomagnetic recording medium and applying a recording or erasing bias magnetic field to the photomagnetic recording medium. A maintaining mechanism maintains the magnetic field applying member to be parallel with the photomagnetic recording medium when the magnetic field applying member has separated the most from the photomagnetic recording medium. A fixing mechanism fixes the magnetic field applying member so as to be in a predetermined position relationship with the photomagnetic recording medium.
