An evaporator used in a car air conditioner satisfies a a relation of 0.9&#x2266;P/P&#x2266;1.1, where Pis the passage cross sectional area of each portion of a refrigerant discharge passage of a refrigerant inlet outlet member of the evaporator, and Pis the passage cross sectional area of a pipe which establishes communication between a second refrigerant passage of an expansion valve and a compressor. Preferably, relations of W&#x3e;Wand H&#x3e;Hare satisfied, where Wand Hare the internal width and height of an upstream end portion of a straight portion of an outward bulged portion of a third plate of the refrigerant inlet outlet member, and Wand Hare the internal width and height of a downstream end portion of the outward bulged portion.

Evaporator

Each of front and rear side walls of a first member of a tank main body of each header tank of an evaporator has protrusions provided at longitudinal opposite ends thereof and projecting outward in the vertical direction. Front and rear outward projecting walls of a third member are cut away at the longitudinal opposite ends. The third member has protrusions provided at the longitudinal opposite ends of each of the front and rear side walls. Each protrusion is overlappingly located on the inner side of the corresponding protrusion of the first member, and is brazed thereto. Each engagement claw of each end member has a first portion brazed to the outer surface of the corresponding protrusion of the first member, and a second portion bent inward in the front-rear direction such that it engages with the corresponding protrusion, and its distal end is located inward of the outer surface.

A heat exchanger for use as an evaporator includes a heat exchange core having a plurality of heat exchange tubes arranged in a left-right direction at a spacing, and a refrigerant turn tank as a lower tank disposed toward a lower end of the heat exchange core. The heat exchange tubes are inserted through respective tube insertion holes formed in the turn tank and joined to the tank. The turn tank has drain grooves each extending from a forwardly or rearwardly outer end of each of the tube insertion holes for discharging condensation water to below the turn tank therethrough. Each of the drain grooves has a bottom extending gradually downward as the bottom extends away from the tube insertion hole. the exchanger is used as the evaporator, the top surface of the turn tank can be drained of water with an improved efficiency.

An evaporatorcomprises a heat exchange corecomprising a plurality of tube groupsarranged in rows as spaced forwardly or rearwardly of the evaporator and each comprising a plurality of heat exchange tubesarranged in parallel at a spacing laterally of the evaporator, and a lower tankdisposed at a lower end of the coreand having connected thereto lower ends of the heat exchange tubesproviding the tube groups. The lower tankhas a top surface, front and rear opposite side surfacesand a bottom surface. The lower tankis provided in each of front and rear opposite side portions thereof with groovesformed between respective laterally adjacent pairs of heat exchange tubesand extending from an intermediate portion of the top surfacewith respect to the forward or rearward direction to the side surfacefor causing water condensate to flow therethrough. Each of the groovesincludes a first portionexisting on the top surfaceof the lower tank and having a bottom face which is gradually lowered from the intermediate portion of the top surfacetoward a front or rear side edge thereof. The evaporatorcan be diminished in the quantity of water condensate that will collect on the top surfaceof the lower tank

An evaporator includes a plurality of heat exchange tubes extending vertically and arranged in rows spaced apart from each other in a front-rear direction. A drainage acceleration member extending vertically is disposed between the adjacent front and rear heat exchange tubes. A gap is present between each of the adjacent front and rear heat exchange tubes, and the drainage acceleration member disposed between the front and rear heat exchange tubes. The gaps serve as drain channels. The evaporator exhibits excellent drainage of condensed water.
