There are disclosed a 4-alkoxy-1,3-dioxane-5-carbonitrile which is a novel compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R represents a lower-alkyl group, and which is useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of Vitamin B.sub.1, and a process for preparing the novel compound by subjecting a 3-alkoxy-2-propenenitrile to reaction with a formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst.

4-Alkoxy-1,3-dioxane-5-carbonitriles and process for preparing the same

An improved catalyst suitable for use in the production of an unsaturated carboxylic acid by the catalytic vapor phase oxidation of an unsaturated aldehyde is provided. In this catalyst, a heat-resistant inorganic substance, such as alumina, silica-alumina and silicon carbide, having a particle diameter of 3 through 10 mm, an apparent porosity of 35 through 60%, a water absorption of 20 through 50%, an average pore diameter of not less than 40 microns, a specific surface area of not more than 2 m.sup.2 /g and a bulk specific gravity of 1.5 through 2.0 is used for supporting a composition containing molybdenum, phosphorus, vanadium and the alkali metals. The use of the above-mentioned carrier results in the advantages that the unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as methacrylic acid, can be selectively produced from the unsaturated aldehyde at a high yield and that the mechanical strength of the catalyst is remarkably improved.

Benzene is catalytically oxidized in the vapor phase with oxygen in the presence of an alcohol to be converted to phenol. The catalyst used is represented by the formula: M.sub.a Ag.sub.b P.sub.c O.sub.d wherein M is selected from zinc, titanium, zirconium, tin, bismuth and vanadium, Ag is silver, P is phosphorus and O is oxygen, and a=1, b=0.005.about.5 and c=0 to 6. Phenol is obtained at an enhanced yield even though the catalytic oxidation is carried out at a relatively low temperature as compared with conventional catalytic oxidation processes.

C., a reaction feed containing propylene, ammonia and molecular oxygen into contact with a catalyst consisting of an oxide composition of the empirical formula: Mo.sub.a Co.sub.b Fe.sub.c X.sub.d O.sub.e wherein X denotes at least one atom of an element selected from phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth and wherein the ratio a:b:c:d:e is in a range of 12:4 to 9:1 to 5:0.01 to 0.07:39.5 to 52.7, said catalyst being prepared by providing an aqueous mixture containing molybdenum-, cobalt- and iron-containing compounds and a phosphorus-, arsenic-, antimony- or bismuth-containing compound, converting the aqueous mixture into a dried solid mixture and calcining the solid mixture at a temperature of at least 550.degree. C.
