A system for accessing a write-once read-many storage medium is intended to modify and update a stored data on the medium according to an operator's desire and easily manage the modified data and the updated data on the storage medium. The system is arranged to have a first and second searching unit, a writing unit and a reading unit. The first searching unit operates to search a non-writing area next to a last data-written area on a data storage area of the storage medium and the writing unit operates to read the updated data on the searched area. The second searching unit operates to search a last data-written area on the storage medium and the reading unit operates to read the data from the searched area. For searching the area by the second searching unit, a binary search may be used.

For filing small amounts of information, both control mark and original image information may be included on a single sheet. The mark sheet may include marks representing search terms descriptive of the content of the original image data which can be used by an operator to search the electronically registered and filed documents.

By entering necessary information in the field of facsimile numbers and the field of data designating information of the OMR sheet, converting the same into an image signal and then applying the converted image signal to the determining device, preparation of the designated information and process of transmitting the prepared information by means of the facsimile device are automatically performed as a series of processes by the electronic filing apparatus.

This thereby avoids an erroneous movement of the rectangular area instructed by an erroneous instruction from the coordinate specifying unit.

A display system includes a memory device, a central processing unit, a converting circuit and a display device. An apparatus for cataloging and retrieving image data is programmed to store not only image data obtained by scanning each original but also reduced image data obtained by thinning these image data and search data used for the convenience in search operations. In a search operation, a plurality of reduced image data may be displayed simultaneously or sequentially with corresponding search data. Image data may be stored in a compressed form so that an increased amount of data can be stored. The apparatus may be programmed such that stored reduced image data are sequentially displayed while a specified key is depressed and particular image data corresponding to the data displayed when the key is released are displayed.
