An exhaust emission gas control device having a first filter trapping particulates contained in an exhaust gas, and a second filter removing offensive odor components in the exhaust gas. The first filter is a honeycomb type having a cordierite substrate on which .tau.-alumina is coated. The second filter is provided downstream of the first filter, and is formed by an ion-exchange of copper on a synthetic zeolite rich in silica to form copper ions thereon.

Exhaust emission control device for a diesel engine

A device for heating the passenger compartment and warming up the engine, including a turbo heater having a blower and a turbine driven by the exhaust gas of the engine. The turbo heater is operated as soon as the engine is started. Hot air discharged from the blower is fed into the engine soon after the engine is started, and the hot air discharged from the blower is fed into the passenger compartment. When the temperature of the engine coolant become high, the operation of the turbo heater is stopped.

An exhaust gas purifying apparatus comprising a first and a second casings having expansion chambers, respectively, a third casing arranged between the first and second casings to form a passage therebetween, an inlet pipe introducing the exhaust gas into the first expansion chamber, and an outlet pipe discharging the exhaust gas from the second expansion chamber, whereby a muffler is constituted. The apparatus also comprises a filter arranged in the third casing to trap particulates in the exhaust gas, and a heater arranged adjacent to the filter on the side of the second expansion chamber to burn the particulates deposited on the filter, to regenerate the filter. A flow control unit, comprising a bypass and a valve therein, is arranged such that the exhaust gas normally flows through the filter and the heater, and when the filter is regenerated, at least a part of the exhaust gas flows in reverse through the heater and the filter. This exhaust gas purifying apparatus is built-in to the muffler.

An exhaust gas emission control device comprising a filter provided in the exhaust passage, a heater provided near the filter, first and second passage bypassing the filter and the heater, a single first valve upstream of the filter a single second valve downstream of the filter, and a controller controlling the first and the second valve. When trapping particles, one of or both of the first and second valves closes the first and second passages, and the first and second valves open the exhaust passage, whereby exhaust gas flows through the filter and the heater. On the other hand, when regenerating the filter, the heater is switched ON, the first valve shuts the exhaust passage and the second valve is open to a predetermined degree, so that exhaust gas flows into the first passage, and a part of the exhaust gas flowing via the first passage flows through the heater, the filter, and the second passage.

Exhaust gas emission control device for diesel engine

An internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder block and a cylinder head. A combustion chamber is formed in the cylinder block and the cylinder head. An accumulation chamber is formed within the cylinder head and communicated with the combustion chamber via an operating valve. The accumulation chamber is disposed adjacent to an exhaust port of the engine and is heat exchangeable with the exhaust port. The operating valve is opened approximately at the time the compression stroke is commenced and is closed approximately at the time the compression stroke is completed. A cap is disposed at the entrance of the accumulation chamber and has a plurality of jets formed thereon. The compressed combustible gas mixture is accumulated within the accumulation chamber, heated by the heat transmitted from the exhaust port and spouted out into the combustion chamber, so that approximately uniform turbulences are generated in the combustion chamber and the flame speed is increased.

A compression-ignition type internal combustion engine comprising a combustion chamber and an accumulation chamber which are interconnected to each other via an accumulation valve. The opening operation of the accumulation valve is controlled so that the accumulation valve remains opened during the compression stroke. In the first half of the compression stroke, a jet of air is spouted into the combustion chamber from the accumulation chamber to create a strong swirl motion in the combustion chamber. In the latter half of the compression stroke, the air in the combustion chamber flows into the accumulation chamber where the air is accumulated under high pressure, which air is then spouted from the accumulation chamber into the combustion chamber at the next cycle.

Electronically controlling, fuel injection method

In an intake air heater of an engine, in which a fuel containing alcohol is employed, the amount of hot air increases, as the concentration of alcohol in the fuel increases. Although the latent heat of alcohol is about seven times as large as that of gasoline, the amount of intake air is controlled in relation to the concentration of alcohol in the fuel, so that the intake air is heated, as a function of a concentration of alcohol, using an alcohol sensor.

The valve is open from a first time in the compression stroke to a second time in the succeeding expansion stroke. The communicating passage is so arranged that the exhaust gas spouted from the accumulation chamber into the combustion chamber generates a swirl motion in the combustible gas mixture.

An internal combustion engine is provided with an auxiliary piston reciprocating within an auxiliary chamber for generating turbulence in a gas mixture contained within a main combustion chamber. Forward motion of the auxiliary piston causes the injection of a gas into the main combustion chamber through a communicating passageway when the main piston approaches top dead center of the compression stroke.
