Method for enhancing oil recovery in a hydrocarbon-containing carbonate reservoir including: injecting a slug of an oil recovery solution into the carbonate reservoir such that the wettability of a rock surface of the hydrocarbon-containing reservoir is altered toward more water-wet; and injecting a slug of a displacing fluid into the hydrocarbon-containing carbonate reservoir formation after injecting the slug of the oil recovery solution. The oil recovery solution comprising: a manganese-bearing aqueous solution having manganese ions and one or more major ions. The aqueous saline solution having a concentration of manganese ions between 100 and 1,000 ppm TDS and a concentration of major ions that is equivalent to the concentration of major ions in seawater as it is found in nature. The one or more major ions can include: sodium ion, magnesium ion, calcium ion, chlorine ion, sulfate ion, bicarbonate ion, and combinations of the same.

Manganese-assisted waterflooding processes for enhanced oil recovery in carbonate formations

A core sample holder assembly for performing core flood experiments includes a first end cap having a first cylindrical body with a first central chamber and a first inner end that is ring shaped, and a second end cap having a second cylindrical body with a second central chamber and a second inner end that is ring shaped. Three flow lines are spaced elevationally apart, the three flow lines extending from a first outward end to a first inward facing surface of each end cap. A flexible sleeve circumscribes the first end cap and the second end cap. A test sample bore is defined by the first inner end, the second inner end, and an inner diameter surface of the flexible sleeve. A central axis extends through the first end cap, the second end cap, and the flexible sleeve, the first end cap, the second end cap, and the flexible sleeve being axially aligned.

Device and process for maintaining zero capillary pressure boundary condition during core flood experiments

Provided are oil recovery compositions and processes for enhancing oil recovery from a carbonate reservoir. A process for enhancing oil recovery includes injecting a first slug of an aqueous solution having a salinity in the range of about 5,000 ppm TDS to about 7,000 ppm TDS and sulfate ions in the range of about 500 ppm to about 5000 ppm. After injection of the first slug, the process includes injecting a second slug of an aqueous solution having a salinity in the range of about 5,000 ppm TDS to about 7,000 ppm TDS, calcium ion concentrations in the range of about 100 ppm to about 1000 ppm, and magnesium ions in the range of about 200 ppm to about 2000 ppm. A third slug of seawater or produce water may then be injected as chase water.

Tailored injection water slug designs for enhanced oil recovery in carbonates

A process for the preparation and imaging of a sample of rock from an oil and gas reservoir is provided. A sample of reservoir rock may be obtained, such as from a core sample obtained using a core sampling tool inserted in a wellbore extending into an oil and gas reservoir. A photoresist may be deposited on the surface of reservoir rock sample to form a homogenous layer. The photoresist-coated surface of the reservoir rock sample may be imaged using a focused ion beam (FIB). The photoresist protects the pores and other surface features of the rock from damage or implantation by the FIB ion beam and thus minimizes the curtain effect in the resulting images.
