A system and method of controlling operation of an internal combustion engine are provided. The method includes performing a cylinder deactivation operation while running the engine, selecting at least one of the plurality of temperature maintenance actions to increase an exhaust temperature, and performing at least one of the plurality of temperature maintenance actions effective to increase the exhaust temperature. The plurality of temperature maintenance actions may include one or more of a charge air cooler bypass operation, an EGR cooler bypass operation, an aftertreatment system heater operation, a turbocharger bypass operation, a turbocharger geometry adjustment operation, an intake air throttle adjustment operation, and a delayed injection timing operation, or combinations thereof.

A method for detecting an erroneous velocity data using a controller in communication with a velocity sensor onboard a vehicle includes receiving a time-series velocity data from the velocity sensor, calculating a time-series acceleration data using the time-series velocity data, calculating a time-series jerk data using the time-series acceleration data, calculating a saturated (numerically bounded) jerk data using the time-series jerk data, calculating an estimated acceleration data using the saturated jerk data, calculating a difference between the estimated acceleration data and the time-series acceleration data, and determining whether the difference is greater than a threshold value. The erroneous velocity data is detected in response to the difference being greater than the threshold value.

A system and method for identifying and analyzing a route using an inexpensive GPS system is provided. The system and method provides a location for storing GPS and vehicle operating data for at least one route, requiring a plurality of runs over the at least one route. Once a predetermined minimum number of runs have been reached, the system and method define a route segment, interpolate additional data points using the GPS and vehicle operating data, synchronize the data over the plurality of runs, and analyze the data. This disclosure provides a system and method for determining cylinder deactivation in a vehicle engine to optimize fuel consumption while providing the desired or demanded power. In one aspect, data indicative of terrain variation is utilized in determining a vehicle target operating state. An optimal active cylinder distribution and corresponding fueling is determined from a recommendation from a supervisory agent monitoring the operating state of the vehicle of a subset of the total number of cylinders, and a determination as to which number of cylinders provides the optimal fuel consumption.
