Provided is a silicone hydrogel soft contact lens obtained by curing in a double-sided casting mold, a liquid mixture including glycerol mono(meth)acrylate and at least one type of silicone monomer having at least one hydroxyl group or polyethylene glycol group in the molecular structure thereof, the silicone hydrogel soft contact lens having a wettable surface without a polymerized lens-shaped material being subjected to post-processing to improve the water wetting properties of a surface thereof.

A method permits the fabrication of a silicone-containing copolymer molded article having a hydrophilic surface by cast molding and without employing a high-molecular-weight hydrophilic polymer even when employing a polypropylene mold. The method polymerizes a monomer solution containing a silicone monomer having a (meth)acryloyl group; a hydrophilic monomer having a vinyl group; a crosslinkable monomer; and a polymerization initiator in a cavity of a mold having a hydrophobic cavity surface. The polymerization initiator has a 10-hour half-life temperature of 70&#xb0; C. or higher and 100&#xb0; C. or lower, and the polymerization is conducted by maintaining a temperature within a range of from the temperature of the polymerization initiator contained in the monomer solution to 35&#xb0; C. below the temperature for one hour or more; and maintaining a temperature higher than the temperature of the polymerization initiator contained in the monomer solution for one hour or more.

A method for producing moisture-containing soft contact lenses by polymerizing monomers for contact lenses in the presence of a diluent for monomers and substituting the diluent contained in the resulting polymer with an aqueous solution, wherein the diluent is composed of one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of triethylene glycol, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether and triethylene glycol monomethyl ether and a moisture-containing contact lens composed of a copolymer of the following main components, (1) two or more kinds of hydrophilic monomers selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and N,N-dimethylacrylamide, (2) an alkyl methacrylate and (3) a crosslinkable monomer, and an aqueous solution, which has a moisture content of 50-70% and exhibits a penetration strength of 1100 gf/mm or more. The contact lens of the present invention is optically transparent and exhibit excellent mechanical strength.

A compound represented by the following formula 1: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an unsubstituted or substituted benzyl group or unsubstituted or substituted phenyl group, method for producing a copolymer comprising copolymerizing a monomer mixture containing the compound, copolymer for lenses containing a copolymerized component represented by the following formula 2 ##STR2## and a lens consisting of the copolymer. The compound of the formula 1 is a reactive dye exhibiting excellent hydrolysis resistance, good copolymerizability with other comonomers, excellent dyeing property and proper solubility in comonomers.
