An image display unit includes a linear display device. The linear display device is line-scanned to display a two-dimensional image. The linear display device has a video signal protection function. In the linear display device, video protection can be implemented using a very simple system for turning off some pixels. Device ID information can be embedded into a display terminal using the image display unit.

Image display unit and display terminal using the same

In a planar type plasma discharge display device including first and second electrode groups to display a desired image by plasma discharge produced between the first and second electrode groups, its accuracy may be increased, and its manufacturing may be simplified. A pair of discharge electrode groups comprising a first electrode group and a second electrode group, each formed by arraying a plurality of electrode elements, are arrayed on a common substrate in a two-dimensional fashion. Then, a desired image is displayed by plasma discharge produced between selected electrode elements of the first and second electrode groups. To solve a problem of an ordinary matrix type high-definition display device which is not reliable because an area of a terminal disposed portion is increased by the enormous number of terminals concerning the horizontal direction scanning, a terminal width is reduced or terminals are disposed very close to each other. The display device includes first and second electrode groups. The first electrode group is formed by arraying a plurality of electrode elements X extended in a first direction, and the second electrode group is formed by arraying a plurality of electrode elements Y extended in the direction crossing the first direction. The electrode element Y of the second electrode group forms adjacent four electrode elements into one set, a common terminal is led out from every other electrode elements in each set, and a plasma discharge portion is formed at a portion in which every other electrode elements X of the first electrode groups and corresponding adjacent two electrode elements in each set of the second electrode group cross to each other.

Planar type plasma discharge display device

In an alternating-current driving-type display device utilizing the plasma discharge, a discharge maintaining electrode group composed of a plurality of discharge maintaining electrodes (I) and an address electrode group composed of a plurality of address electrodes (J) are formed on one substrate (,), the address electrode group which crosses the discharge maintaining electrode group through an insulator layer (,) and a discharge starting address group from a plurality of discharge starting address electrodes (K) composing a part of the address electrode group are continuously formed at the same time, the discharge maintaining electrode group and the discharge starting address electrode group are formed on the same plane, and a dielectric layer is formed on the discharge maintaining electrode group, the address electrode group and the discharge starting address electrode group.

Display device

A display apparatus utilizing plasma discharge and having pixels of high definition can be obtained. An AC drive type display apparatus utilizing plasma discharge has a discharge sustain electrode group formed of a plurality of discharge sustain electrodes on one substrate, and an address electrode group formed of a plurality of address electrodes thereon. Dielectric layers are formed at least on the discharge sustain electrode group and a discharge start address electrode group formed of a plurality of discharge start address electrodes forming a part of the address electrode group.

Display apparatus

A plurality of discharge electrodes (23), (24) are formed on a first substrate (22) at an interval between the adjacent electrodes set to 50 .mu.m or smaller. A fluorescent layer (26) is formed on a second substrate (25 opposed to the first substrate (22). A sealed vessel (28) is formed by locating the first and second substrates (22) and (25) so that the electrodes (23) and (24) and the fluorescent layer (26) should be located on their inner sides. A predetermined gas is introduced in the sealed vessel (28) so that a pressure of the introduced gas should be within the range from 0.8 to 3.0 atmospheric pressure. Ultraviolet rays are produced by plasma discharge and make the fluorescent layer (26) emit light which is employed as illumination light.
