Oral devices such as a pacifier, bottle cap, teething tools and toys, and methods for using the same are provided. An oral device includes a bulb portion configured to be disposed inside a mouth of a user and a wider neck portion coupled distally to the bulb portion and configured to be held by user's lips. The neck portion is configured such that, when it is sucked on by the user, the neck portion moves in the lateral direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the oral device from a first, unexpanded configuration to a second, expanded configuration such that a lateral contact area of the neck portion with the user's lips increases. The oral device can include one or more expansion accommodation features that facilitate expansion and retraction of the neck portion.

A dental model is provided including at least one artificial flexible jaw including an arch-shaped base portion having outer and inner walls extending between first and second ends, the base portion holding a plurality of teeth. The base portion is flexible and extendable so that its first and second ends can move in three dimensions with respect to each other. Thus, the base portion can move to various configurations in which the first and second ends can be positioned in any manner with respect to each other, e.g., at different distances from each other and/or in different planes. The dental model can include one or both of hard palate and soft palate with or without uvula configured to deform when the base portion is deformed. The one or more jaws can be mounted on a holder.

An orthodontic apparatus for installation in a patient's mouth is disclosed. The orthodontic apparatus includes a first extension wire, a second extension wire, and a palatal archwire. Each of the first and second extension wires includes a proximal portion and a distal portion. The proximal and distal portions and the palatal archwire are manipulatable to apply corrective buccal, labial, and transverse forces on the patient's dento-alveolar complex (DAC), to correct the shape of the patient's palate.

A dental implant system for supporting a cosmetic tooth prosthesis includes an elongated body adapted to be disposed in a jaw bone of a patient. The elongated body includes a distal end and a proximal end and extends along a longitudinal axis. The elongated body includes a tapered outer surface that tapers along the longitudinal axis distally from the proximal end of the elongated body. The outer surface of the tapered elongated body includes a plurality of barbs for securing the elongated body in the jaw bone of the patient.

An orthodontic apparatus for installation in a patient's mouth is disclosed. The orthodontic apparatus includes a first extension wire, a second extension wire, and a palatal archwire. Each of the first and second extension wires includes a proximal portion and a distal portion. The proximal and distal portions and the palatal archwire are manipulatable to apply corrective buccal, labial, and transverse forces on the patient's dento-alveolar complex (DAC)to correct the shape of the patient's palate.

Thiols are trapped, and converted to disulfide compounds, by a process of reacting them with compounds containing a 1,2,4-thiadiazole ring structure carrying a substituent at position 3 of the thiadiazole ring, and being unsubstituted at position N-2. The process is useful pharmacologically, in inhibiting certain thiol-containing enzymes such as H.sup.+ /K.sup.+ -ATPase (the proton pump), and industrially, in selective removal of thiol compounds from gas or liquid mixtures.

Novel thiadiazole compounds are provided, which are effective as proton pumps inhibitors, useful in treating peptic ulcers by inhibition of the proton pump enzyme H.sup.+ /K.sup.+ -ATPase. The compounds are 3-substituted 1,2,4-thiadiazolo [4,5-.alpha.]benzimidazole and 3-substituted imidazo[1,2-d]-1,2,4-thiadiazoles corresponding to the general formula: ##STR1## where X and Z either represent an optionally substituted benzene ring fused to the diazole nucleus, or represent a variety of independent chemical groupings (hydrogen, lower alkyl, halo, etc.) and Y is selected from a wide range, e.g. heterocyclics and carbonyl groups.

Novel thiadiazole compounds are provided, which are effective as proton pumps inhibitors, useful in treating peptic ulcers by inhibition of the proton pump enzyme H.sup.+ /K.sup.+ -ATPase. The compounds are 3-substituted 1,2,4-thiadiazolo �4,5-.alpha.!benzimidazole and 3-substituted imidazo�1,2-d!-1,2,4-thiadiazoles corresponding to the general formula: ##STR1## where X and Z either represent an optionally substituted benzene ring fused to the diazole nucleus, or represent a variety of independent chemical groupings (hydrogen, lower alkyl, halo, etc.) and Y is an electronegative group.
