Disclosed is an improved approach for managing access to resources by workloads in a computing system. A much more accurate and useful technique is provided for determining disk utilization, and for using the calculated disk utilization to enforce workload constraints and limits. The technique may be used by any application that is attempting to share storage between multiple workloads can use the present solution, as well as any operating system and workload manager that need to manage workloads and resources.

Method and system for implementing workload management by monitoring disk utilizations

Techniques are provided for managing, within a storage system, the sequence in which I/O requests are processed by the storage system based, at least in part, on one or more logical characteristics of the I/O requests. The logical characteristics may include, for example, the identity of the user for whom the I/O request was submitted, the service that submitted the I/O request, the database targeted by the I/O request, an indication of a consumer group to which the I/O request maps, the reason why the I/O request was issued, a priority category of the I/O request, etc. Techniques are also provided for automatically establishing a scheduling policy within a storage system, and for dynamically changing the scheduling policy in response to changes in workload.

Storage-side storage request management

Techniques are provided for managing, within a storage system, the sequence in which I/O requests are processed by the storage system based, at least in part, on a one or more logical characteristics of the I/O requests. A method and apparatus for coordinating access to a storage system in a real time processing system is disclosed. In an apparatus including a file server, a storage system, a real time process, and a non-real time process, an apparatus and method is disclosed for coordinating accesses to the storage system, the method includes the steps of: 1) computing an available data rate from a peak bandwidth data transfer rate for the storage system, 2) receiving a first access request from the real time process, the first access request including a request for a requested data rate, 3) granting the first access request if the requested data rate is less than or equal to the available data rate, and 4) allowing the real time process to directly access the storage system at the requested data rate. In addition, the method of the present invention includes the steps of: 1) receiving a second access request from the non-real time process, the second access request including information indicating an identity of a desired file, 2) assigning an assigned data rate to the non-real-time process, the assigned data rate being less than or equal to the available data rate, and 3) allowing the non-real time process to directly access the storage system at the assigned data rate.
