The invention provides methods for treatment of acute coronary syndrome and prediction of adverse cardiac events on the basis of elevations of catalytic iron in biological fluid of a human subject. An embodiment of the invention provides a method for early detection of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in a human subject at the time of presentation of the chest pain. The method includes analyzing a test sample of the biological fluid for amount of catalytic iron and detecting acute coronary syndrome in the human subject.

Methods of predicting and treating adverse cardiac events

The invention provides methods for early diagnosis or detection of acute coronary syndrome and prediction of adverse cardiac events on the basis of elevations of catalytic iron in biological fluid of a human subject. An embodiment of the invention provides a method for early detection of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in a human subject at the time of presentation of the chest pain. Methods and kit for early detection of acute coronary syndrome and prediction of adverse cardiac events

The present invention provides a method of determining whether an individual is at risk for atherosclerosis, comprising the step of measuring the level of cLDL and/or autoantibody to cLDL in a sample obtained from this individual. The invention further discloses a method of reducing carbamylation in an individual with a monomeric amino acid or other enzymatic or non-enzymatic inhibitors of carbamylation. The instant invention also provides a method to decrease the level of cLDL by direct elimination of cLDL from the blood or plasma of an individual. The invention also provides a method of treating or preventing atherosclerosis in an individual by inhibiting aggregation and/or deposition of cLDL in the individual.

Prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis by reducing carbamylation of LDL or the effects of carbamylated LDL

The present invention provides a method of determining whether an individual is at risk for atherosclerosis, comprising the step of: measuring the level of carbamylated LDL in a sample obtained from said individual. Further provided is a method of reducing carbamylation in an individual in need of such reducing, comprising the step of: treating said individual with a monomeric amino acid or another enzymatic or non-enzymatic inhibitor of carbamylation. Also provided is a method of preventing carbamylation in an individual with normal renal function, comprising the step of: treating said individual with a monomeric amino acid. Further provided is a method of treating or preventing atherosclerosis in an individual in need of such reducing, comprising the step of: inhibiting aggregation and/or deposition of carbamylated LDL in said individual.

Diagnosing atherosclerosis risk by measuring carbamylated low density lipoprotein levels

Kidney disease is diagnosed by measuring urinary catalytic iron in humans. Progressive kidney disease is treated by administering an iron chelator to humans. In particular, the progression of kidney disease essentially can be halted and the severity of kidney disease can be reduced by the administration of iron chelators to humans afflicted with a progressive kidney disease. The methods include measuring catalytic iron content in urine in a human afflicted with a progressive kidney disease and administering an iron chelator to the human. The method can include measuring total urinary protein content, blood urea nitrogen or creatinine in a blood sample before, during or after the administration of an iron chelator.

Diagnosis and treatment of human kidney diseases

Diabetic nephropathy and microalbuminuria are treated with the herb Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix. In one embodiment, the method includes boiling the herb to form an aqueous extract. The aqueous extract is administered to the diabetic individual to treat diabetic nepliropathy or to an individual exhibiting microalbuminuria. Alternatively the method can include administering a salt of lithospermic acid extracted from the herb. The method can include determining the level of protein in urine before, during and/or after administering the aqueous extract or a salt of lithospermic acid.

Treatment of diabetic nephropathy and microalbuminuria

Diabetic nephropathy and microalbuminuria are treated with the herb Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix. In one embodiment, the method includes boiling the herb to form an aqueous extract. The aqueous extract is administered to the diabetic individual to treat diabetic nephropathy or to an individual exhibiting microalbuminuria. Alternatively the method can include administering a salt of lithospermic acid extracted from the herb. The method can include determining the level of protein in urine before, during and/or after administering the aqueous extract or a salt of lithospermic acid.

The present invention provides a substantially pure phopholipase A.sub.2 protein isolated and purified from rabbit kidney cortex, having a molecular weight of 28 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE, is calcium independent, is cytosolic, has a specific activity of approximately 1.2 .mu.mol/mg protein/minute and a pH optimum of approximately 7.5 and exhibits a preferential hydrolysis toward sn-2 fatty acid from diradylglycerophospholipids. Also provided are a first monoclonal antibody that specifically binds to the protein of claim 1 various methods of using, inhibiting or measuring said protein.
