Low VOC automotive sealer compositions containing reactive urea/urethane compounds are disclosed. Sealers and tintable sealers utilyzing the reactive urea/urethane compounds have improved physical properties with a faster dry times without sacrificing other desirable properties. These compositions are found to be useful for automotive refinish according to this invention.

A method for reducing the volatile organic content of coating compositions wherein first, the ketimine of acetone is formed by reacting acetone and a ketimine having the formula ##STR1## wherein n is 1 to 4, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 may be alkyl aryl, cycloaliphatic or substituted alkyl, aryl, or cycloaliphatic group. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 may be the same or different, with the proviso that R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are not both CH.sub.3. R.sub.3 is an aliphatic, aromatic arylaliphatic or cycloaliphatic group, which may also contain O, N, S or Si. The ketimine of acetone is subsequently reacted with at least one isocyanate functional crosslinking resin.

Method for reducing volatile organic content of coating compositions

A coating composition based on amines, aldimines and isocyanates which forms a polyurea coating or film. These coating compositions are especially useful in the automotive refinish industry due to the cure rate at ambient conditions. The coatings of these compositions can be useful for obtaining low VOC (Volatile Organic Content) levels.

Method of promoting the cure of unsaturated polyester resins with a peroxide initiator at room or below room temperatures (low temperatures) by including as a promoter N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMPT) or a blend of DMPT and N,N-dimethyl-m-toluidine (DMMT) and to the polyester composition containing such promoter. The use of the DMPT or blend of DMPT and DMMT as a promoter provides a fast cure at low temperatures without loss of physical properties of the cured resins.
