A HAMR data storage device may include a magnetic media and a slider comprising: a main pole, a waveguide, and a near-field transducer (NFT) situated between the main pole and the waveguide, wherein an air-bearing surface (ABS) of the slider comprises a transparent overcoat layer situated over the main pole, the waveguide, and the NFT, and wherein the transparent overcoat layer has a particular thickness such that, during an operational phase of the HAMR data storage device, a gap between a media-facing surface of the transparent overcoat layer and the magnetic media is less than about 0.5 nm.

A novel disk drive enclosure includes a disk drive base having a bottom portion and four side walls that define a cavity therebetween. At least one disk is mounted in the cavity. The disk drive also includes a top seal that includes a peripheral portion that overlies each of the four side walls and a central portion that spans the cavity. A metal flange protrudes from all four side walls of the disk drive base, and is folded over the peripheral portion of the top seal along all four side walls. The top seal is continuously adhered to the metal flange along an entire length of all four side walls. The disk drive enclosure encloses helium gas.

A disk drive includes an opaque cover secured to a base, where the opaque cover has an opening. A see-through insert, which includes an electrically conductive material, is affixed to the opaque cover over the opening. The electrically conductive material may be a coating applied to the see-through insert which, in one embodiment is a polymer coating having a certain surface resistivity. Alternatively, the coating's ESD-dissipative properties may be due to the presence of sputtered gold, sputtered indium tin oxide or a metal film. The electrically conductive material may alternatively be embedded in the see-through insert.
