A data protection agent is installed within a virtual machine (VM). A request to perform a backup is received. The request includes identifications of virtual machine disks (VMDKs) associated with the virtual machine. Communications are exchanged with a disk manager of a guest operating system of the VM to generate a map that maps the VMDKs to volumes attached to the VM. Communications are exchanged with an application in the VM to be protected to identify which of the volumes contain application databases associated with the application. A copy service is instructed to prepare the application for backup. A request is issued to a snapshot data mover for a snapshot of the application. The snapshot request includes identifications of a subset of the VMDKs mapped to corresponding volumes that contain the application databases. VMDKs mapped to corresponding volumes not containing the application databases are excluded from the snapshot request.

System and method to exclude unsupported disks during application consistent backups

A data protection agent is installed within a virtual machine (VM). A request to freeze an application in the VM is issued to a copy service. A request for a snapshot is issued to a snapshot data mover, external to the VM. Upon receiving an identifier for the snapshot, communications are exchanged with the copy service to thaw the application, the snapshot identifier is passed to the agent thereby allowing the agent to access the snapshot and rollover data from the snapshot to secondary storage for the backup, and notification to the copy service about a success of the backup is withheld. During the rollover, listening begins for status updates concerning a progress of the rollover. Based on the status updates, the copy service is notified that the backup failed or succeeded.

System and method for avoiding unwanted log truncation (data loss) during application consistent virtual machine snapshots

A data protection agent is installed as a guest within a virtual machine (VM) hosted by a host and a snapshot data mover is installed external to the VM on the host. Upon receiving a command to conduct a backup, a first request is issued to a copy service of the VM indicating that an application in the VM is to be backed up. A second request for a snapshot is issued to the snapshot data mover. The snapshot data mover passes the snapshot request to a virtual machine manager. Upon the snapshot data mover receiving an identifier for the snapshot, the snapshot data mover passes the snapshot identifier to the agent thereby allowing the agent to locate the snapshot and conduct the backup.

Transparent snapshot-based application consistent virtual machine protection

A command is received by a data protection agent to conduct a file system-consistent backup of a virtual machine (VM) having a copy service. A first request is issued to the copy service indicating that all files of the VM are to be backed up and that archive attributes of all the files should remain unchanged. A second request is issued to a snapshot data mover for a snapshot of the VM. The snapshot request is passed to a virtual machine manager. Upon the snapshot data mover receiving an identifier identifying the snapshot from the virtual machine manager, the snapshot identifier is passed to the data protection agent, thereby allowing the agent to locate the snapshot and conduct the backup.

Transparent snapshot-based file system consistent virtual machine protection

A method of performing data recovery of a first virtual machine (VM) hosted on a first hypervisor to a second hypervisor that is different from the first hypervisor is provided. The method identifies information indicating format of a first virtual disk in a backup of the first VM, and creates a second virtual disk using the information indicating format of the first virtual disk. The method also accesses information indicating configuration of the first VM and metadata of the first virtual disk, and creates a second VM hosted on the second hypervisor using the information indicating configuration of the first VM and the metadata of the first virtual disk. The method further attaches the second virtual disk to the second VM.

Data recovery of guest virtual machines

A backup storage includes a persistent storage and a backup manager. The persistent storage stores backups of entities and a global application data map. The backup manager obtains a restoration request for restoration of an application hosted by an entity of the entities; makes a determination to accelerate the restoration based, at least in part, on the application; in response to the determination: identifies a virtual disk level backup of the entity that is associated with the application using the global application data map; obtains the virtual disk level backup from the backups of the entities; and restores the application using the virtual disk level backup.

A method for processing backup generation requests includes receiving a backup generation request; in response to receiving the backup generation request: identifying a backup to transfer to a backup storage, the backup includes data blocks; performing a data allocation analysis on the backup to generate an offset table; dividing, based on at least the offset table, the backup into sub-portions, each of the sub-portions includes at least one of the data blocks; and transferring, using at least two data streams, at least two of the sub-portions to a backup storage.

Embodiments for a method of backing up virtual hard disks by: parsing a list of base parent and differencing disks to identify disk parameters and child disks of immediate parent disks; creating a differencing disk chain in reverse time order of modification of the base parent disk starting from the base parent disk to a latest child differencing disk; identifying changed sectors in each child disk starting from the latest child differencing disk; creating a list detailing a respective differencing disk, sector offsets and logical data sector index for each changed sector; iteratively adding updated sectors to the list for latest changed sectors that were not previously added to the list by a later child disk by reading the changed sectors from their respective child disk; and merging, in a single step, the changed sectors read from their respective child disks into the base parent disk.

A unified backup workflow process for different hypervisor configurations of virtual machines on different storage of a cluster leverages RCT-based backup functionality so that backup operations can be performed by a single host of the cluster. The process enables backing up together virtual machines that are local, as well as part of CSV or SMB storage using virtual machine level snapshots as checkpoints rather than volume level snapshots that were traditionally used. Backup data is sent to a backup server as a data stream rather than a file, which avoids the necessity of maintaining chains or structures that identify parent-child disks on the server.

A production host for hosting virtual machines includes a persistent storage and a production agent. The persistent storage stores a backup groupings queue and a backup process stack. The production agent obtains backup generation requests for the virtual machines; in response to obtaining the backup generation requests, generates the backup groupings queue based on the backup generation requests; identifies a maximum parallelism of the production host based on resources utilized by a portion of the virtual machines specified by the backup groupings queue; consolidates the backup groupings queue to generate the backup process stack; and generates backups for virtual machines specified by the backup process stack in parallel based on the maximum parallelism.

A remote backup agent that provides data storage services to virtual machines includes a persistent storage and a processor. The persistent storage stores workflows for the virtual machines. The processor performs a first remote backup of the virtual machines based on the workflows using production agents hosted by production hosts that also host the virtual machines; obtains a workflow update; updates the workflows based on the workflow update to obtain updated workflows; and performs a second remote backup of the virtual machines based on the updated workflows using the production hosts without modifying the production agents.

System and method for backup in a virtualized environment

A production host for hosting virtual machines includes a persistent storage and a production agent. The persistent storage stores virtual machine data associated with a virtual machine of the virtual machines and a virtual machine shadow copy associated with the virtual machine data. The production agent obtains a backup generation request for the virtual machine; in response to the backup generation request, generates the virtual machine shadow copy; makes a determination that the virtual machine shadow copy comprises an auto-recovery disk that comprises some data; in response to the determination, merges the virtual machine shadow copy using a parent block set storage template to obtain a backup of the virtual machine; and store the backup in backup storage. The parent block set storage template is not associated with the virtual machine shadow copy.
