In an embodiment, a computer-based method for automatically selecting resources to include in a building plan layout is disclosed. The method involves obtaining a set of resource rules that define resources placeable within a building plan layout, obtaining a set of behavioral rules that define the behaviors of the resources, generating a model by evaluating the set of resource rules and the set of behavioral rules, obtaining a configuration, wherein a configuration comprises at least one of building demand, resource permutations, and other simulation attributes, generating at least one set of performance metrics by executing the model with the configuration, storing the at least one set of performance metrics, the model, and the configuration as an entry in a metrics database, selecting an entry from the metrics database, and outputting the entry to a building plan layout generator.

A computer-implemented method for generating multiple room placements is disclosed. In the embodiment, the method involves obtaining information indicating a number of rooms to be placed in a department, the information including room type information, capturing at least one room pattern using a pattern language-based regular expression, and generating a plurality of room placements using the at least one room pattern by placing the rooms to be placed in the department according to the selected room pattern.

Systems and methods for realizing a complex building system are disclosed. The systems and methods utilize computer-based techniques to rapidly explore large numbers of pattern matching scenarios on a scale which heretofore has not been attempted. In an embodiment, the computer-based technique performs large-scale pattern matching operations to find the best match between functional patterns and spatial patterns. For example, with reference to a particular building system, the technique involves operational modeling to identify the types and volumes of services to provide (functional patterns) and to characterize the physical relationships between the services (e.g., adjacency preferences), along with establishing libraries of three dimensional spaces (spatial patterns), in the form of room and department libraries and building massing configuration libraries. Large numbers of functional patterns and spatial patterns are then matched to each other using cost-based algorithms to find the best match or matches between the form and function.
