Disclosed are various embodiments for ranking items in an electronic commerce system. A subset of a plurality of items is identified in at least one computing device, where the items are sold through an electronic commerce system. The items in the subset are ranked relative to each other based, at least in part, on the virtual shopping cart activity of a plurality of users with respect to the items.

Systems and methods are provided for determining customer interest associated with an item or category of items. In some embodiments, one or more discussion forums associated with each of a plurality of items may be determined. For each item, interest criteria associated with the item may be determined based at least in part on the one or more discussion forums associated with the item. The interest criteria may include the number of user posts in the one or more discussion forums and/or the number of users who have participated in the one or more discussion forums. An interest score associated with each item may be determined based at least in part on the interest criteria. In some embodiments, interest ranking information for an item or category may be generated by comparing the interest score associated with an item or category and interest scores associated with other items or categories.

Disclosed are various embodiments of generating customized packaging for an item associated with an order. A request to generate customized packaging for an item associated with an order is received. A user interface allowing a user to participate in design of the customized packaging is generated. Customized packaging is then generated based upon the customized packaging selected and/or designed by the user.

A catalog of items is stored in a data store accessible by one or more computing devices. A geographical filtering process is provided that is executable in the one or more computing devices. The geographical filtering process comprises logic that obtains a specification of at least one geographical area, and logic that identifies a subset of the items based at least in part upon a plurality of past commercial transactions associated with the items occurring within the at least one geographical area.
