A WLAN driver of the TCP proxy device transmits network packets transmitted from a sender device over the data communication network to a wireless station. TCP network packets are diverted to a TCP proxy pipeline. First, the wireless receiver device is emulated to a wireless sender device by providing an ACK packet to the sender device in order to close the TCP session on the sender side by responding to a TCP handshake with the sender device. Second, the sender device is emulated to a wireless station over the wireless network connection by initiating a TCP handshake with a wireless station including receiving an ACK packet from the wireless station and suppressing the ACK packet from an initial destination associated with the sender device.

For data packets are received from a plurality of sessions and associated with a plurality of transmitting Wi-Fi stations on the Wi-Fi network. A wireless communication network is self-provisioned using coordination of data plane behavior to steer stations to preferred access points. To do so, a policy concerning traffic flow for the wireless communication network is received. Data plane traffic flow is monitored at each of the plurality of access points distributed around the wireless communication network. At some point, it may be determined the data plane traffic flow at a first access point from needs to be reduced based on the data plane traffic flow relative to the policy. In response, a station is steered to a preferred access point using OpenFlow rules to affect data plane routing decisions at the access point (e.g., drop, delay, or reprioritize packets).

Network packet are steered to a particular processor of multiple available processors on an access point. Multiple WLAN interfaces can include at least one WLAN interface dedicated to network packets in compliance with IEEE 802.11ac and at least one WLAN interface dedicated to network packets in compliance with IEEE 802.11bgn. Responsive to a determination of a single station destination, a packet distribution index is determined for the network packet with respect to each of the multiple processing cores. The packet distribution index is based on at least whether a network packet is formatted according to IEEE 802.11ac or to IEEE 802.11bgn, among other factors. The network packet is processed by the processing core having the lowest packet distribution index.
