A system for controlling a contention state for a communication link between a base station controller and customer premises equipment in point-to-multipoint communication. The contention state is controlled using a state machine, which includes a grant pending absent state in which a unicast request slot is maintained open for use by the customer premises equipment. During the grant pending absent state, the customer premises equipment sends no upstream data to the base station controller but can use the unicast request slot to request a data slot for sending upstream data to the base station controller. In the grant pending state, the customer premises equipment preferably uses piggybacking to request grant of a next data slot while sending upstream data to the base station controller.

Protocol for allocating upstream slots over a link in a point-to-multipoint communication system

A method and an apparatus for automatic retransmission and error recovery for packet oriented point to multipoint communication, which integrates adaptive and dynamic responsiveness for parameters for automatic retransmission using wireless communication, are provided. A wireless communication link is divided into a downstream portion and an upstream portion. Parameters are selected for automatic retransmission independently for the downstream portion and the upstream portion of the wireless communication link. A BSC controls the selection of parameters for automatic retransmission for all CPE within a cell. As part of a TDD frame, in which the BSC and the CPE share communication bandwidth using a TDMA technique, the BSC includes its selection of parameters for automatic retransmission to be used by CPE within a control section of the TDD frame. The BSC dynamically and adaptively determines new selected parameters for automatic retransmission, in response to a wireless communication link with each independent CPE.

Automatic retransmission and error recovery for packet oriented point-to-multipoint communication

A communication network configured to substitute serving gateway ('SGW'), packet data network gateway ('PGW'), and mobility management entity (&#x201c;MME&#x201d;) with an OpenFlow network controller (&#x201c;OFNC&#x201d;) for packets routing between mobile devices and the Internet is disclosed. The network includes a cellular base station, a packet data network (&#x201c;PDN&#x201d;), and OFNC. The cellular base station provides wireless communication for user equipments (&#x201c;UEs&#x201d;). The PDN is able to route packet flows to their destination(s). The routing controller or OFNC manages a cluster of routers including at least one edge router via OpenFlow protocol. The OFNC, in one embodiment, establishes a routing path between the cellular base station and the PDN for an authenticated UE via a group of routers based on information obtained from an authenticating server and a charging system.

Method and apparatus for improving LTE enhanced packet core architecture using openflow network controller

A mobile network configuration is able to offload packet flows based on identification ('ID') rules to a wireless network using a deep packet inspection ('DPI') function. After activating DPI function located in a packet data network gateway (&#x201c;PDN-GW&#x201d;), every packet flow passing through the PDN-GW is monitored, detected, and analyzed based on a set of predefined ID rules. Upon identifying a packet flow for a predefined network application, the packet flow is offloaded from a long term evolution (&#x201c;LTE&#x201d;) network to a wireless local area network (&#x201c;WLAN&#x201d;) or Wi-Fi network. To reduce traffic loading on the LTE network, the PDN-GW sends binding updates containing offloading information associated with the packet flow to user equipment (&#x201c;UE&#x201d;) for offloading implementation.

Method and apparatus for offloading packet traffic from LTE network to WLAN using DPI

In a case that the measure oferrorssignal qualitycorresponds to more errors than a first predetermined threshold, communication changes from a first set of wireless link parameters to a second set of wireless link parameters. The second set of wireless link parameters corresponds to higher error tolerance than the first set of wireless link parameters. In a case that themeasure of errorssignal qualitycorresponds to fewer errors than a second predetermined threshold, communication changes from the first set of wireless link parameters to a third set of wireless link parameters. The third set of wireless link parameters corresponds to lower error tolerance than the first set of wireless link parameters. Preferably, the measure oferrorssignal qualityis determined by monitoring a number of NACK messages and a number of ACK messages that occur. It is determined that the measure oferrorssignal qualitycorresponds to more errors than the first predetermined threshold when more than a predetermined number of NACK messages occur in succession. It is determined that the measure oferrorssignal qualitycorresponds to fewer errors than the second predetermined threshold when more than a predetermined number of ACK messages occur in succession.

Dynamic wireless link adaptation

The invention provides a method and system for adaptive point to multipoint wireless communication. The wireless physical layer and the wireless media-access-control (MAC) layer collectively include a set of parameters, which are adaptively modified by a base station controller for communication with a plurality of customer premises equipment. The base station controller adjusts communication with each customer premises equipment individually and adaptively in response to changes in characteristics of communication, including physical characteristics, amount of communication traffic, and nature of application for the communication traffic.

Integrated self-optimizing multi-parameter and multi-variable point to multipoint communication system

Point to multipoint wireless communication, including automatic retransmission and error recovery for packet oriented point to multipoint communication, which integrates adaptive and dynamic responsiveness for parameters for automatic retransmission using wireless communication. The BSC allocates some portion of the upstream bandwidth as a shared resource and some portion of the upstream bandwidth as unshared when there are messages received but not yet acknowledged. The BSC dynamically and adaptively response to acknowledgement and non-acknowledgement messages from each selected CPE, to integrate the automatic retransmission protocol with the TDD frame and the TDMA technique used within that frame.

A first set of uplink contention slots is allocated for use by a first set of devices. A second set of uplink contention slots is allocated for use by a second set of devices. The first set of uplink contention slots and the second set of uplink contention slots may or may not share contention slots. The first set of uplink contention slots is communicated to the first set of devices. The second set of uplink contention slots is communicated to the second set of devices.
