This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses for foreign object detection (FOD) in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. An FOD protocol can be coordinated with different operating phases of the WPT system, such as an idle phase, a configuration phase, a connected phase, and a power transfer phase. An FOD assessment unit may perform foreign object detection assessments as part of each operating phase. The FOD protocol may include an initial idle phase foreign object detection assessment in the idle phase to handle a scenario in which a Power Receiver is placed on the Power Transmitter before the Power Transmitter has been turned on. The FOD assessment unit may adjust offset values used during each FOD assessment to improve accuracy of foreign object detection. The offset values may be adapted to accommodate movement of the Power Receiver after the initial idle phase foreign object detection assessment.

Foreign object detection in a wireless power transfer system

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses for foreign object detection (FOD) in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. Some implementations relate generally to the use of detection coils that are excited to measure and compare a differential current through a coil pair that includes at least two detection coils. A foreign object may cause a change in impedance for one or more detection coils compared to one or more other detection coils. By detecting the differential current of the coil pair, a detection apparatus may determine that a foreign object is in proximity to one of the detection coils of the coil pair. This disclosure provides several options for the design, construction, layout, and operations of detection coils to improve foreign object detection.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses for a new communication technique between a wireless power transmission apparatus and a wireless power reception apparatus. The new communication technique may be more efficient for communication of a feedback parameter or other control information compared to a legacy packet-based digital communication technique. The new communication technique may use a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal as an analog representation of a feedback parameter or other control information. In some implementations, the PWM communication technique in this disclosure can be used for a variety of control or feedback information from the wireless power reception apparatus to the wireless power transmission apparatus. Furthermore, in some implementations, the PWM communication technique may be used for feedforward information from the wireless power transmission apparatus to the wireless power reception apparatus.

Pulse width communication in a wireless power system

The system and method described herein provide grid-forming control of a power generating asset having a double-fed generator connected to a power grid. Accordingly, a stator-frequency error is determined for the generator. The components of the stator frequency error are identified as a torsional component corresponding to a drivetrain torsional vibration frequency and a stator component. Based on the stator component, a power output requirement for the generator is determined. This power output requirement is combined with the damping power command to develop a consolidated power requirement for the generator. Based on the consolidated power requirement, at least one control command for the generator is determined and an operating state of the generator is altered.

System and methods to address drive train damper oscillations in a grid forming power generating asset

One innovative aspect of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented in a wireless power reception apparatus. In some implementations, the wireless power reception apparatus may include a ferrite layer including a void. The wireless power reception apparatus may also include a first secondary coil configured to generate first power in cooperation with one or more primary coils of a wireless power transmission apparatus, where at least a portion of the first secondary coil resides in the void of the ferrite layer. The wireless power reception apparatus may also include one or more second secondary coils configured to generate second power in cooperation with the one or more primary coils of the wireless power transmission apparatus, where a portion of the second secondary coil is overlaying the portion of the first secondary coil residing in the void of the ferrite layer.

Overlapping secondary coils in a wireless power reception apparatus

This disclosure provides systems, devices, apparatus and methods, including computer programs encoded on storage media, for a wireless power transmission apparatus that supports charging of one or more wireless power receiving apparatuses. The wireless power transmission apparatus may include multiple primary coils organized in groups (referred to as zones). Each zone may have a local controller for managing operation of one primary coil in the zone at a time. A master controller may selectively couple the primary coils to the local controllers. When a first primary coil is coupled to the local controller for a zone, the other primary coils in that zone may be disabled. The master controller may manage which primary coils from neighboring zones are coupled to their respective local controllers. Thus, when the first primary coil is activated, the adjacent primary coils (near the first primary coil) can be muted or disabled to mitigate undesirable interference.

Wireless power transmission apparatus with multiple primary coils and adjacent coil muting

A method for mitigating voltage disturbances at a point of interconnection (POI) of a grid-forming inverter-based resource (IBR) due to flicker includes receiving a voltage reference command and a voltage feedback. The voltage feedback contains information indicative of the voltage disturbances at the POI due to the flicker. The method also includes determining a power reference signal for the IBR based on the voltage reference command and the voltage feedback. Moreover, the method includes generating a current vector reference signal based on the power reference signal, the current vector reference signal containing a frequency component of the voltage disturbances. Further, the method includes generating a transfer function of a regulator based on the frequency component to account for the flicker effect. In addition, the method includes generating a current vector based on a comparison of the current vector reference signal and a current vector feedback signal. Thus, the method includes regulating a voltage vector command using the current vector to mitigate the voltage disturbances.

Voltage control loop for mitigating flicker in a grid-forming inverter-based resource

A method for operating an asynchronous inverter-based resource connected to a power grid as a virtual synchronous machine to provide grid-forming control thereof includes receiving a frequency reference command and/or a voltage reference command. The method also includes determining at least one power reference signal for the inverter-based resource based on the frequency reference command and/or the voltage reference command. Further, the method includes generating at least one current vector using the power reference signal(s). Moreover, the method includes determining one or more voltage control commands for the inverter-based resource using the at least one current vector. In addition, the method includes controlling the inverter-based resource based on the one or more voltage control commands such that the inverter-based resource actively participates in controlling at least one of voltage and frequency at a point of interconnection between the inverter-based resource and the power grid in a closed loop manner.

System and method for operating an asynchronous inverter-based resource as a virtual synchronous machine to provide grid-forming control thereof

The system and method described herein provide grid-forming control of a power generating asset having a generator, such as a double-fed generator, connected to a power grid. Accordingly, a stator-frequency error is determined for the generator. The components of the stator frequency error are identified as a damping component corresponding to a tower damping frequency and a stator component. Based on the stator component, a power output requirement for the generator is determined. This power output requirement is combined with the damping power command to develop a consolidated power requirement for the generator. Based on the consolidated power requirement, at least one control command for the generator is determined and an operating state of the generator is altered.

System and methods to address tower damping in a grid forming power generating asset

A method for controlling an inverter-based resource having an asynchronous machine connected to a power grid to provide grid-forming control of the inverter-based resource includes coupling at least one additional device to terminals of a first converter of the inverter-based resource. Further, the method includes emulating, via a controller, at least one of the at least one additional device or the first converter as a first virtual synchronous machine. Moreover, the method includes coordinating, via the controller, operation of the first virtual synchronous machine and a second converter of the inverter-based resource using a vector-control approach to control at least one of voltage and frequency at a point of interconnection between the inverter-based resource and the power grid in a closed loop manner.
