A binder resin composition comprising polyvinyl pyrrolidone-polyvinyl acetate block copolymer (PVP-co-PVAc). The binder polymer and the urethane bond-containing crosslinked polymer are on at least a part of the surface of the inorganic particles to connect and fix the inorganic particles with one another. The urethane bond-containing crosslinked polymer has a weight average molecular weight of 100,000-5,000,000, and the urethane bond-containing crosslinked polymer is present in an amount of 6 parts by weight to 60 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the total weight of the binder polymer and the urethane bond-containing crosslinked polymer.

A method for manufacturing a separator for an electrochemical device which uses polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a dispersing agent, and provides high dispersibility of particles and prevents aggregation of particles, even when inorganic particles having a small particle diameter is used in slurry for forming a porous coating layer. Therefore, the inorganic particles are distributed homogeneously in the porous coating layer of a finished separator. In addition, since PVP is used with a fluorinated binder resin, the separator shows improved peel strength and adhesion to an electrode. Further, a non-solvent ingredient for the fluorinated binder resin is used as a solvent for PVP, and a non-solvent ingredient for PVP is used as a solvent for the fluorinated binder resin.

The separator includes an adhesive layer including first adhesive resin particles having an average particle diameter corresponding to 0.8-3 times of an average particle diameter of the inorganic particles and second adhesive resin particles having an average particle diameter corresponding to 0.2-0.6 times of the average particle diameter of the inorganic particles, wherein the first adhesive resin particles are present in an amount of 30-90 wt % based on a total weight of the first adhesive resin particles and the second adhesive resin particles. The separator shows improved adhesion to an electrode and provides an electrochemical device with decreased increment in resistance after lamination with an electrode.

A separator for an electrochemical device. The separator includes a porous coating layer formed from an acid, which is crosslinkable. As a result, the separator has increased heat resistance, safety and physical strength, shows improved peel strength between the porous substrate and the porous coating layer, and prevents separation of the inorganic particles from the porous coating layer. In addition, the separator shows an improved crosslinking degree so that the added amount of a crosslinkable binder resin may be reduced. Thus, it is possible to increase the added amount of a non-crosslinkable resin, inorganic particles, or both. Even when using a small amount of a crosslinkable binder resin, it is possible to provide both an effect of improving heat resistance and an effect of improving adhesion.

The separator shows improved adhesion between an electrode and the separator, maintains the pores of the adhesive layer even after a process of electrode lamination, and improves the resistance of an electrochemical device.

A method for manufacturing a separator, including the steps of: (S1) preparing a pre-dispersion including inorganic particles dispersed in a pre-dispersion solvent and a first binder polymer dissolved in the pre-dispersion solvent; (S2) conducting a preliminary milling of the pre-dispersion; (S3) preparing a binder polymer solution including a second binder polymer dissolved in a binder polymer solution solvent; (S4) mixing the pre-dispersion with the binder polymer solution and carrying out a secondary milling to obtain a slurry for forming a porous coating layer; and (S5) applying the slurry to at least one surface of a porous polymer substrate, followed by drying, is disclosed. A separator obtained by the method and an electrochemical device including the same are also disclosed. According to the present disclosure, it is possible to provide a separator having a uniform surface and showing improved adhesion.

Disclosed is an electrode assembly including two electrodes having polarities opposite to each other, and a separator interposed between the two electrodes, wherein the separator includes: a separator base which includes a porous polymer substrate having a plurality of pores, and a porous coating layer; and an adhesive layer formed on at least one surface of the separator base, provided to face either of the electrodes and containing an adhesive resin, and wherein the adhesion (Peel Strength) between the porous polymer substrate and the porous coating layer and the adhesion (Lami Strength) between the adhesive layer and the electrode satisfy Mathematical Formula 1. An electrochemical device including the separator is also disclosed. In the electrode assembly, the separator shows increased resistance against scratching and the adhesion between the separator and the electrode can be improved.

The present disclosure relates to an invention directed to a composite separator having a porous coating layer, where the porous coating layer is prepared from a slurry by adjusting a particle diameter of an inorganic matter that is an ingredient of the slurry, so that a sinking rate of the inorganic particles may remarkably slow down and dispersibility may be dramatically improved, and as a result, the content of the inorganic particles may relatively increase and the inorganic particles may be uniformly distributed in the coating layer on a substrate, thereby preventing a reduction in battery performance.
