An air-bag ( ) is mounted in the roof of a motor vehicle to be deployed in front of an occupant ( ) of the vehicle. The air-bag is constrained by tear straps ( ) within the air-bag to inflate initially as a &ldquo;curtain&rdquo; in front of the occupant of the vehicle, that curtain only having a relatively narrow thickness (t). When the tear-straps break, the bag has a more rounded configuration. The bas is releasably retained within a recess ( ) which initially houses the bag. When the bag is fully inflated, the bag becomes totally separated from the recess, to prevent the bag forcing the head of the occupant rearwardly as the torso of the occupant moves forwardly during an accident.

Air-bag and a method of deploying an air-bag

A safety device for a motor vehicle which has a door frame and a door contained within the door frame. The safety device includes: a gas generator; a sensor for sensing at least one of a side impact and a roll-over for activating the gas generator; and an inflatable element connected to the gas generator for being inflated with gas from the gas generator upon activation of the gas generator. The inflatable element can thus assume a non-inflated mode and an inflated mode and can further be positioned adjacent the door in an inflated-mode thereof. The inflatable element is further made of fabric and includes: a first fabric layer defining a front part thereof; a second fabric layer defining a back part thereof, selected parts of the first fabric layer and second fabric layer being interconnected for defining one of linear and point shaped links where the first fabric layer and the second fabric layer are directly secured together. The inflatable element thus incorporates a plurality of substantially parallel elongated cells defined between the links, the cells being configured such that, upon inflation of the inflatable element with the gas from the gas generator, a lower edge portion of the inflatable element is tensioned. The inflatable element further includes an upper edge portion which is configured to be secured to the door frame all along a non-linear part of the door frame.

A safety seat for use in a motor vehicle has a squab (,) and a back (,) and a head-rest (,). There is a pivotal connection between the back (,) and the squab (,). Simultaneously, because of the levers (,) the head-rest (,) will move forwardly relative to the back of the seat. Thus, the head-rest will come into contact with the head of the occupant of the seat, thus minimizing the risk of &ldquo;whiplash&rdquo; injuries.

Emergency locking device for an extractable strap in a vehicle safety

A vehicle seat belt is provided with a device to pre-tension the seat belt should an accident situation arise. Thus, in an accident situation, the person wearing the seat belt is restrained tightly in his seat. The pre-tensioning device includes a force applying means adapted to apply a tension to the seat belt and an over-dead-center linkage which normally prevents the force applying means from applying the force, there being means responsive to a predetermined deceleration to alter the condition of the over-dead-center linkage to permit the force applying means to move the seat belt.

Seat belt pre-tensioning device

A seat belt pre-tensioning device is adapted to be mounted on a vehicle and includes a buckle to receive a seat belt buckle. The device incorporates components which are responsive to a predetermined deceleration of the vehicle and which move to permit spring-loaded components to apply a force to move the buckle to apply a tension to the seat belt.
