A downhole electrical power generation device is provided that includes at least one magnetic element, an electrically conductive element, and a member configured to be positioned within downhole fluid and to vibrate when the downhole fluid flows across a surface of the member. One of the magnetic element and the electrically conductive element is positioned on the member, and the other is configured to be positioned such that the electrically conductive element is located in a magnetic field produced by the at least one magnetic element to generate electrical power on vibration of the member. A method of generating electrical power downhole is further provided.

Active laser guarding system

A measuring apparatus comprises a detector device for detecting a variable to be measured, and a controller operative to control the detector device and generate an output signal indicative of the magnitude of the variable being measured. The detector device comprises a housing on which are mounted two Peltier-Seebeck detectors, the detectors being arranged on the housing such that only the first Peltier-Seebeck detector is exposed, in use, to the variable to be measured. The controller is operative to generate the output signal based on the output of the first Peltier-Seebeck detector and the output of the second Peltier-Seebeck detector so as to account for the effect of the ambient heat on each Peltier-Seebeck detector.

A device for water quality measurement apparatus includes a plurality of multi-element arrays formed on a substrate, which are immersed in a solution for detecting electroactive elements or compounds present in such a solution. A wafer is located between first and second 'O' rings, with the first 'O' ring being disposed on a first side of the wafer and the second &lsquo;O&rsquo; ring being disposed on a second side of the wafer, opposite to the first side. The first and second &lsquo;O&rsquo; rings are arranged such that the wafer is exposed to substantially equal pressure on both sides.

An apparatus for reconstituting dried bacteria includes a first reservoir for the storage of reconstituting solution, a pump via which the reservoir is coupled to one of a pair of hollow needles arranged side by side in operative association with an apparatus for raising or lowering the pair so that in use they can be lowered to pierce a closure bung of a container in which bacteria are sealed under vacuum, the one needle being effectively longer than the other of the two hollow needles so that consequent upon lowering of the pair, the one needle passes through the bung before the other effectively shorter of the two needles. The shorter of the two needles is coupled to a second reservoir for the transfer thereto, in use of the apparatus, of reconstitution solution from the first reservoir together with bacteria from the container.

Toxicity measuring apparatus comprising a sample reservoir in which an aqueous sample to be tested is stored, a reagent reservoir, a diluent reservoir, a mixing chamber vented via a first valve to atmosphere through an air inlet tube which extends within the chamber towards a lower part thereof, second, third and fourth valves via which the sample, the reagent and the diluent respectively are fed selectively to the mixing chamber in accordance with the open/closed state of the said second, third or fourth valves, a toxicity detector cell fed with a mixture of the sample, the reagent and the diluent from the chamber, within which detector cell aqueous sample measurements are carried out, a linear pump and valve means, via which valve means the mixture is drawn through the detector cell from the chamber by the linear pump, or via which air in an upper part of the chamber is drawn from the chamber by the pump in accordance with the open/closed state of the said valve means, whereby for the purpose of mixing the sample, the reagent and the diluent, the said valve means is set so that air is drawn into the chamber via the inlet tube so as to bubble up through the mixture contained therein so as to effect mixing.
