A nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloy having an improved combination of creep-rupture strength at elevated temperatures, resistance to corrosion in sulfur and chloride-containing environments, structural stability at elevated temperatures and good castability. Articles and parts cast from the alloy, in particular directionally-solidified castings, are suitable for use in gas turbine engines, e.g., for stationary land-based and marine propulsion turbines.

Nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloys and castings thereof

A nickel-base superalloy containing 14 to 22% chromium, 5 to 25% cobalt, 1 to 5% tungsten, 0.5 to 3% tantalum, 2 to 5% titanium, 1 to 4.5% aluminum, the sum of the titanium plus aluminum being 4.5 to 9%, up to 2% niobium, about 0.35 to 1.2% boron, up to 3.5% molybdenum, up to 0.5% zirconium, up to 0.2% total of yttrium and lanthanum, up to 0.1% carbon, at least 0.05% of at least one element of the group of hafnium and vanadium with the maximum being about 2.2% hafnium and 2% vanadium, the balance of the alloy being essentially nickel.

Nickel-base superalloys

Nickel-base superalloys suitable for the production of cast parts for use at elevated temperatures in corrosive atmospheres contain in weight percent about 14% to 22% chromium, 5% to 25% cobalt, 1% to 5% tungsten, 0.5% to 3% tantalum, 2% to 5% titanium, 1% to 4.5% aluminum, the sum of the titanium plus aluminium being 4.5 to 9% up to 2% niobium, 0.31% to 1.2% boron, up to 3.5% molybdenum, up to 0.5% zirconium, up to 0.2% in total of yttrium or lanthanum or both, up to 0.1% carbon, the balance apart from impurities being nickel. The tensile ductility of low chromium substantially precipitation hardened nickel-base alloys within the temperature range of 600.degree. C. to 900.degree. C. is improved through the incorporation in the alloys of controlled amounts of yttrium.

Nickel-base alloys of improved high temperature tensile ductility

The high temperature properties of a nickel-base alloy containing correlated percentages of chromium, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, aluminium, carbon, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, hafnium, boron, yttrium and lanthanum are substantially maintainedor improved by further correlation of the percentages of chromium, carbon and boron in the alloy.

Alloys of nickel, chromium and cobalt

Cast alloys containing correlated percentages of chromium, cobalt, niobium, titanium, aluminum, carbon, zirconium, boron, hafnium, etc., offer a good combination of stress-rupture life and impact strength at elevated temperatures.

Nickel-chromium high strength casting

A nickel-base alloy containing correlated percentages of chromium, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, aluminum, carbon, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, hafnium, boron, yttrium and lanthanum displays excellent stress rupture strength at elevated temperatures together with good corrosion resistance in sulphur- and chloride-containing environments.
