An injectable physiologically acceptable aqueous phase fluorocarbon emulsion, which has substantially no free fluorocarbon, has an excellent stability is prepared by a process of the invention. Typically, more than about 99.8 wt. % of the fluorocarbon remains in the size range of about 0.2 to 0.4 microns even after being stored at room temperature for one year or more in sealed containers under a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The emulsion is useful in medical applications, for example, coronary angioplasty, cancer therapy, among others.

Process for imparting oil- and water-repellency to fibrous substrates, particularly polypropylene upholstery fabric, which comprises applying thereto an effective amount of a composition prepared by first combining one or more fluorocarbon dispersions or polyfluoroalkyl-containing polymeric latexes containing an anionic surfactant with a nonionic surfactant having an HLB of 15.+-.3 and then with an amphoteric polymer in an amount sufficient to make the composition slightly cationic, thereby facilitating deposition of said composition to said substrate. An anionic surfactant-containing elastomeric latex may be added so as to impart abrasion resistance.

Mixtures of (1) a polymer of at least one polyfluoroalkyl acrylate or methacrylate and (2) a copolymer of (a) at least one polyfluoroalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, (b) at least one 3-chloro- (or 3-bromo-) 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate, (c) at least one alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and (d) at least one polyoxyethylene acrylate or methacrylate. Mixtures are prepared by first polymerizing (1) and then (2) (a)-(d). Mixtures are useful as oil- and water-repellents, particularly for rainwear.

Fluorine-containing polymer compositions and their preparation

Liquid hydrocarbon foams containing from 0.05 to 5 wt. % of a fluorocarbon polymer containing from 25 to 60 wt. % units of the structure ##STR1## where --R.sup.1 is --H or --F, m is an integer from 2 to 10, and n is 1 or 2 and 75 to 40 wt. % units of the structure ##STR2## where --R.sup.3 is an alkyl group containing from 10 to 20 carbon atoms. The foams are useful as oil and gas well fracturing fluids and for applying the fluorocarbon polymer to textiles as an oil and water repellant.

Hydrocarbon foams

Copolymers comprising (i) from 50 to 85 percent by weight of units derived from a perfluoroaliphatic acrylate or methacrylate monomer and (ii) from 50 to 15 percent by weight of units derived from a dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate or methacrylate or the corresponding acrylamide or methacrylamide monomer in its amine salt, quaternary ammonium or amine oxide form. The copolymers are useful in oil and water repellency applications.

Fluorine-containing oil- and water-repellant copolymers

Terpolymers comprising (i) from 55 to 80 percent by weight of units derived from a perfluoroaliphatic acrylate or methacrylate monomer, (ii) from 15 to 35 percent by weight of units derived from a nonfluorinated polyethylene oxide acrylate or methacrylate monomer, and (iii) from 1 to 15 percent by weight of units derived from a nonfluorinated dialkylaminoethyl acrylate or methacrylate monomer in its free base, amine salt, quaternary ammonium, or amine oxide form. The terpolymers are useful in oil and water repellency applications.

Fluorine-containing terpolymers

Textile treating adducts having a chemically combined durabilizing segment with a melting point between about 100.degree. and about 300.degree.C. and which has a Solubility Parameter differing by at least one unit from the Solubility Parameter of the functional component of the adduct.
