Silicone primer compositions that provide excellent anchorage for phenyl-based silicone pressure sensitive adhesive prepared tape. The compositions comprise a phenyl-modified siloxane component such as a dimethyl-diphenyl siloxane component. The relative amount of phenyl substituents in the phenyl-modified primer matches the mole percent of phenyl substituents in the adhesive. One particular PSA system includes a primer composition and an adhesive which both contain a dimethyl, 5.3 mole percent diphenyl, silanol chain stopped silicone gum. Very thin layers of the primer are used between a substrate and a pressure sensitive adhesive. The primer compositions virtually eliminate all tendencies of phenyl-based silicone PSA prepared tape to delaminate.

Primer for phenyl-based silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives

A multilayer laminate having improved peel strength and containing a first and third layer comprising various plastic, metal, or glass materials, and a second layer containing an addition-curable silicone composition curable to form an adhesive having good physical properties and improved peel adhesion properties, the second layer comprising (A) a vinyl-containing polydiorganosiloxane composition, (B) a hydrogen-terminated polysiloxane, preferably in an amount sufficient to provide an adhesion-promoting molar ratio of silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms in (B) to olefinically unsaturated radicals in (A); (C) a catalytic amount of a platinum-containing hydrosilation catalyst; (D) an effective amount of an adhesion promoter selected from the group consisting of (i) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]-fumarates; (ii) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]maleates; (iii) allyl-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]maleates; (iv) allyl-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]fumarates; and (v) N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) alkyl]maleimides, wherein R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are each alkyl radicals of 1 to about 8 carbon atoms; and (E) from about 0 to about 200 parts of an extending filler; and (F) from about 0 to about 50 parts of a reinforcing filler.

Laminates containing addition-curable silicone adhesive compositions

Pressure sensitive silicone adhesive compositions having excellent peel adhesive strength, high tack and excellent quick stick capability are provided. Generally the adhesive composition is made of a MQ resin and a silicone gum, to which a silicone fluid is added. A cure catalyst can then be added to the mixture prior to coating.

Silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions

A meshed for producing an abrasion-resistant, ultraviolet radiation cured coating on a surface of a polymeric substrate is disclosed, as well as the article produced from the method. The uncured coating material which is substantially free of non-reactive volatile components is (i) applied to the substrate (ii) heated along with the substrate to a temperature sufficient to drive a portion of the coating material into a region beneath the surface of the substrate, (iii) and cured onto the substrate by exposing the coating material under anaerobic conditions to sufficient ultraviolet radiation to cure the coating material. Heating of the solvent-free coating prior to ultraviolet radiation cure and while in contact with the substrate results in improved adhesion of the coating to the substrate.

Acrylic coated polycarbonate article

A method for producing an abrasion-resistant, ultraviolet radiation cured coating on a surface of a polymeric substrate is disclosed, as well as the article produced from the method. The uncured coating material which is substantially free of non-reactive volatile components is (i) applied to the substrate (ii) heated along with the substrate to a temperature sufficient to drive a portion of the coating material into a region beneath the surface of the substrate, (iii) and cured onto the substrate by exposing the coating material under anaerobic conditions to sufficient ultraviolet radiation to cure the coating material. Distortion and haze of pressure sensitive tapes upon removal can be minimized by incorporating a small amount of chemically compatible, high molecular weight silicone polymer release modifier to the curable PSA compositions. Organopolysiloxanes of the general formula:

A fast curing, addition-curable silicone composition curable to form an adhesive having good physical properties and improved lap shear adhesive properties, comprising (A) a vinyl-containing polydiorganosiloxane composition, (B) a hydrogen-terminated polysiloxane in an amount sufficient to provide an adhesion-promoting molar ratio of silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms in (B) to olefinically unsaturated radicals in (A); (C) a catalytic amount of a platinum-containing hydrosilation catalyst; (D) an effective amount of an adhesion promoter selected from the group consisting of (i) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]fumarates; (ii) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]maleates; (iii) allyl-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]maleates; (iv) allyl-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]fumarates; and (v) N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)alkyl]maleimides, wherein R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are each alkyl radicals of 1 to about 8 carbon atoms; and (E) from about 0 to about 200 parts of an extending filler; and (F) from about 0 to about 50 parts of a reinforcing filler; providing that (F) must be present if (A)(ii) is absent.

Addition-curable silicone adhesive compositions

Coated polycarbonate articles, such as sheet and film, are coated with a hard, abrasion and chemical resistant coating which is the photoreaction product of an acrylated urethane oligomer, a difunctional acrylate monomer and preferably also a monofunctional olefinic monomer. These coated articles may be thermoformed or flexed without cracking or delamination of the protective coating. A specific embodiment of the invention is a coated flexible siloxane-polycarbonate block copolymer.

Coated polycarbonate articles

A novel radiation curable coating composition for thermoplastic substrates contains a polyfunctional acrylic monomer, a mono-, di- or trifunctional acrylic monomer, a thermoplastic or elastomeric polymer and a photoinitiator. The coatings can be cured to hard, abrasion resistant coatings, yet retain a significant degree of residual unsaturation. The residual unsaturation and the thermoplastic or elastomeric polymer provide excellent adhesion between the coating and topcoats.
