The present disclosure relates to improvements in turbocharger efficiency and more particularly to a method and system for estimating the efficiency loss of a turbocharger. The method comprises the steps of monitoring a plurality of operating parameters and determining a compressor exit temperature according to a first calibration map based on these operating parameters. An estimate of instantaneous turbocharger efficiency loss according to a second calibration map is then determined, based on the compressor exit temperature. The instantaneous turbocharger efficiency loss is used to determine an estimate of cumulative turbocharger efficiency loss during engine service. The estimate of cumulative turbocharger efficiency loss is compared with a first predetermined efficiency loss threshold and a first signal is generated if the first predetermined efficiency loss threshold is exceeded.

Method for estimating the efficiency loss of a turbocharger for an engine

An engine assembly comprising an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber; an intake manifold for supplying air to the combustion chamber; a fuel injector for supplying fuel to the combustion chamber; an exhaust manifold for receiving exhaust gas released from the combustion chamber and a rotatable drive shaft, wherein combustion of fuel in air within the combustion chamber results in rotation of the drive shaft. The engine assembly further comprises a turbocharger system comprising a turbine and a compressor, wherein the turbine is configured to receive exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold, to recover energy from the exhaust gas, and to release the exhaust gas via a turbine outlet; and wherein the compressor is configured to receive energy from the turbine and thereby to compress air for use in combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber. An intake throttle valve is configured to selectively control a boost pressure by controlling supply of air to the intake manifold; and a bypass valve is configured to selectively divert exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold away from the turbine, wherein the bypass valve is controlled by the boost pressure. A controller is configured (a) to provide an intermediate value for desired valve position of the intake throttle valve based on a desired oxygen to fuel ratio; and (b) to output a final value for desired valve position of the intake throttle valve based on the intermediate value for desired valve position and an engine speed value.

Method of controlling an internal combustion engine with a turbocharger

A method for monitoring an SCR injection system is disclosed. The method includes operating a pump, and measuring a first pressure drop value in the SCR injection system during actuation of a reductant injector. A second pressure drop value in the SCR injection system is measured during a further actuation of the reductant injector. It is determined to perform a deposit mitigation strategy based on the first pressure drop value and the second pressure drop value.

A control system is disclosed. The control system may have a physical sensor that may output a physical output value, and a virtual sensor network that may output a virtual output value. The control system may also have an electronic control module that may be configured to receive the physical output value from the physical sensor and receive the virtual output value from the virtual sensor. The electronic control module may be further configured to determine a trust level of the physical sensor based on the physical output value, and determine that the trust level of the physical sensor is below a first threshold trust value. The electronic control module may control a machine based on the virtual output value responsive to determining that the trust level of the physical sensor is below the first threshold trust value.
