A method for multicast load balancing in a wireless network having a plurality of access points. The method includes setting a maximum Internet protocol multicast bandwidth for the access points, receiving an admissions control request from a client at one of the access points, and determining whether the admissions control request from the client is for an admitted or unadmitted multicast stream at the access point. The access point is responsive to the admissions control request for the admitted multicast stream by servicing the admitted multicast stream and to the admissions control request for the unadmitted multicast stream by servicing the unadmitted multicast stream where the bandwidth required for the unadmitted multicast stream, plus that portion of the access point bandwidth currently used for all existing downlink multicast streams, does not exceed the maximum internet protocol multicast bandwidth for the access point.

A wireless authentication protocol. Access to a network is managed by providing a challenge-handshake protocol within the Extensible Authentication Protocol for authentication between a client and the network.

Architecture for controlling access by a Light Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP)-compatible wireless client to a network that utilizes a challenge/handshake authentication protocol (CHAP). A proxy service is hosted on a network server disposed on the network, and accessed in response to receiving access information from the client. The access information is processed with the proxy service into CHAP-compatible access information, and forwarded to a CHAP-based access control server disposed on the network to determine whether to grant network access to the client.

A packet format for multicast messages which designates a single receiver to send an acknowledgment to the multicast message. The designated receiver responds to the multicast message with an acknowledgment. If the designated receiver does not respond to the multicast message, the message is resent. The resent message may designate a different receiver for acknowledging the message.
