A control system for a surface controlled sub-surface safety valve has first and second control lines. The first control line communicates control fluid to the sub-surface safety valve and preferably has a sump and in-line filters. Hydraulic pressure applied to the safety valve with this first control line can open the safety valve. The second control line also communicates control fluid to the sub-surface safety valve and preferably has a sump. A connecting valve is connected between the first and second control lines. The connecting valve allows control fluid to communicate from the first control line to the safety valve but prevents fluid communication from the second control line to the first control line. To open the valve, the second control line is exhausted to a reservoir. The dual control lines provide redundant control of the safety valve and can also be cycled to remove debris from the system.

Communication tool for accessing a non annular hydraulic chamber of a subsurface safety valve

A communication tool () includes a housing () having recesses () and a set of axial locating elements () radially extendable through the recesses () and engagably positionable within a profile of a tubing retrievable safety valve (). An anti rotation device () is radially outwardly extendable relative to the housing (). The anti rotation device () operably engages the tubing retrievable safety valve () to substantially prevent relative rotation between at least a portion of the communication tool () and the tubing retrievable safety valve (). A cutting tool () is radially outwardly extendable relative to the housing (). The cutting tool () is operable to create a fluid passageway () between a non annular hydraulic chamber () and an interior the tubing retrievable safety valve ().

A tubing retrievable safety valve () having a non annular hydraulic chamber () in a sidewall portion thereof is operable to received a communication tool () therein such that relative rotation between at least a portion of the communication tool () and the tubing retrievable safety valve () is substantially prevented. The communication tool () is operable to create a fluid passageway () between the non annular hydraulic chamber () and the interior of the tubing retrievable safety valve () by penetrating through the sidewall portion and into the non annular hydraulic chamber (). Thereafter, when a wireline retrievable safety valve () is positioned within the tubing retrievable safety valve (), hydraulic fluid is communicatable thereto through the fluid passageway ().

A system for communicating hydraulic fluid to a wireline retrievable safety valve () comprises a tubing retrievable safety valve () having a non annular hydraulic chamber () in a sidewall portion thereof and a communication tool () that is selectively locatable within the tubing retrievable safety valve (). The communication tool () creates a fluid passageway () between the non annular hydraulic chamber () and the interior of the tubing retrievable safety valve () by penetrating through the sidewall portion and into the non annular hydraulic chamber (). Thereafter, when the wireline retrievable safety valve () is positioned within the tubing retrievable safety valve (), hydraulic fluid is communicatable thereto through the fluid passageway ().
