Disclosed are a method and system for propagating data changes in a hierarchy of dataset models in which each dataset model comprises an analytic and one or more parent datasets, including a primordial dataset. The analytic is executed to instantiate a first instance of the data model. After a change in a primordial dataset, each instance of a dataset model that descends from the primordial dataset is invalidated, and the analytic is re-executed to create a second instance of the data model. Analytical results may be displayed. The first dataset model may include a metric in which the definition of the metric comprises metadata of the dataset model. Metric values may be stored in a first cache, re-computed on a new instance of the dataset model, and stored in a second cache.

System and method for computing and managing datasets using hierarchical analytics

A method of monitoring in a distributed computer network having a management server servicing a set of managed computers. The method begins by deploying a management infrastructure across a given subset of the managed computers, the management infrastructure comprising a runtime environment installed at a given managed computer. At the given managed computer, the routine executes a monitoring agent in the runtime environment to determine whether a given threshold has been exceeded. Then, a given action is taken if the given threshold has been exceeded. The monitoring agent is executed upon receipt of an external event or as a result of an internal timer. Execution of the monitoring agent involves taking a measurement, comparing the measurement against the given threshold, and then taking some corrective action if possible.

System, method and computer program product for monitoring in a distributed computing environment

A method of managing time expressions for use by applications in a distributed computer network having a management server servicing a set of managed computers. The method begins by defining a set of timers, with each timer preferably comprising an expression of logical operators with a set of one or more primitives as operands. The set of timers is stored in a hierarchical namespace associated with the management server. Preferably, the timers and primitives are stored separately in the hierarchical namespace, with the primitives indexed by name for prompt retrieval.

Distributed monitor timer service for use in a distributed computing environment

An application 'builder' generates a configuration management application for use in a distributed computing environment having at least one management server and at least one endpoint. The endpoint includes a set of endpoint data to be managed by the application. The application developer begins by creating application prototyping data for the particular management application. The application prototyping data is then imprinted on a 'blank' profile object to generate a prototype application comprising a profile object and an associated database whose records contain configuration information to be applied to at least one endpoint object. After the prototype application is generated, control information derived from the prototyping data is passed from the profile object to the endpoint object to read/write the endpoint data to/from the database records and/or to modify the database records in some way. As a result of such evaluation, the application developer can test how the prototype will operate because the testing is carried out with the actual endpoint data. Thereafter, the application prototyping data is refined as necessary and the process is repeated until the prototype is adequately tested. When the application prototype data is finalized, it is again applied to the profile to generate a final profile object, which is then used to drive a source code generator to create the application.
