There is described herein a low profile dipole antenna element. A pair of these elements can be arranged in a crossed manner to provide two orthogonal polarized radiators. The antenna element may be combined with an electrically conductive surface and a feed cable and connected to a feed source.

A method and apparatus for increasing capacity and performance of a base station for a sectorized cellular wireless network is disclosed in which one of the sector antennas is replaced or supplanted by a novel sub-sector antenna that generates a plurality of asymmetrical sub-sector coverage areas that collectively substantially cover the coverage area of the replaced sector antenna. The use of asymmetrical coverage areas permits the total coverage area to closely approximate the symmetrical sector coverage area without creating excessively large sub-sector handover zones or introducing severe degradation in the network performance. This in turn permits the selective replacement of a single sector antenna rather than the wholesale replacement of all sector antennas in a region, leading to lower transitional costs and the ability to provide a focused approach to capacity planning.

Asymmetrical beams for spectrum efficiency

A patch radiator for use in beamformed or steerable antenna systems which maximizes upper frequency limit and simultaneously minimizes the lower frequency limit, by providing an annular patch configuration in which a central region of the patch element is devoid of material, whereby this central region is of a different shape from the shape of the exterior perimeter of the patch element. One possible configuration of such a patch radiator comprises a square exterior shape, enclosing a central circular region of removed material. In this manner, the upper frequency limit threshold tends to rise as the interior annular perimeter is reduced. Preferably, the exterior and interior perimeters have no interior angles of more than 180&#xb0;.

The invention provides frequency reuse techniques to enable fractional frequency reuse to be achieved for various cellular radio deployment grids, even for high order modulation such as 16 QAM and 64 QAM by the use of controlled and coordinated notched antenna patterns. The technique allows all frequencies to be used in all cells, thus maximizing system capacity while minimizing and controlling adjacent cell interference by the use of notched antenna patterns.

Frequency reuse scheme for point to multipoint radio communication

A millimeter-wave point-to-multipoint LMDS radio system for broadband wireless access having frequency reuse that includes a cell area divided into an integer number k sub-sectors of equal angular arc 360/k degrees each; a hub having antennas each configured to generate an antenna beam that covers an integer number j sub-sectors, an angular gap i being defined between edges of coverage of one of the antennas where i is an integer number of sub-sectors; a total integer number of n channel sets each of at least one radio channel and each configured independent and free of interference from other ones of the channels in other ones of the channel sets, each of the channel sets having a number of uses defined by a quantity k/(i&plus;j) that is an integer equal or greater than two, each channel set being deployed with a common re-use pattern with an angular stagger between antennas of (i&plus;j)/n sub-sectors.

Frequency reuse in millimeter-wave point-to-multipoint radio systems

A base station comprising an arrangement of several directional antennas whose individual azimuthal beam patterns achieve substantially omnidirectional coverage is disclosed. The invention is particularly suitable to telecommunications networks in an initial developmental stage, or to networks deployed in rural areas, both scenarios requiring a low-capacity high-range omnidirectional coverage area. The antennas are generally less conspicuous than a purely omnidirectional antenna achieving the same range, and preferably possess horizontal and vertical polarization ports. In its simplest form, the invention provides a single base station transceiver connected simultaneously to the horizontal polarization port of each antenna. Phase shifters may be inserted in the transmit path for cancellation of nulls in the interference pattern resulting from connection the transceiver to more than one antenna at a time. As capacity demand increases, further transceivers can be added without change to the antenna arrangement. An additional transceiver provides either pseudo-omnidirectional coverage if connected to the vertical polarization port of each antenna or directional coverage if selectively connected to the vertical polarization port of a single antenna. In the latter case, carrier-to-interference information is fed to a beam select module that controls a transmit switch matrix for establishing the selective connection.

Pseudo-omnidirectional base station arrangement

A base station antenna arrangement comprising a plurality of antenna arrays each capable of forming a multiplicity of separate overlapping narrow beams in azimuth, the arrays being positioned such that the totality of beams formed by the arrays provides a substantially omni-directional coverage in azimuth, azimuth and elevation beamforming means for each array, a plurality of r.f. transceivers each for transmitting and receiving r.f. signals for one or more calls, switching matrix means for connecting each transceiver with one or other of the arrays via the beamforming means, control means for controlling the switching matrix means whereby a particular transceiver is connected to a particular array via the beamforming means to exchange r.f. signals with a remote station located in the area covered by one of the narrow beams.

Base station antenna arrangement

The present invention relates to integral antenna assemblies and in particular relates to an integral antenna assembly for microcellular base stations and fixed wireless access base stations. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided an integral antenna comprising a radome, a layered antenna and a reflector back plane, wherein the layered antenna has an outer surface and a rear surface; wherein the radome is attached directly to an outer surface of the antenna; and wherein the back plane provides a reflective cavity and encloses the feed network for the antenna and is attached to the rear surface of the antenna. In accordance with another aspect of the invention there is provided method of operating an integral antenna comprising a radome, a dielectric substrate having a patch antenna element on a surface thereof and a reflector back plane providing a reflective cavity behind the radiating element; wherein the radome is attached directly to an outer surface of the dielectric and the reflector back plane is attached to a rear surface of the dielectric, the patch being connected through the substrate to a microstrip feed line, whereby the microstrip feed line lies parallel to the patch, with the patch acting as a ground with respect to the microstrip line, wherein the antenna transmits and receives signals via the feed network.

Antenna assembly

A dual mode transceiver architecture suitable for adaptation in either a handset or a base station and capable of operating in both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode or in Time Division Duplexing (TDD) mode is disclosed. Such a transceiver has an up conversion path capable of up converting an Intermediate Frequency (IF) to a Radio Frequency (RF) signal in either an upper band frequency range or a lower band frequency range. Also the transceiver has a down conversion path, used for receiving, for down converting a RF signal in either the upper band or lower band to a desirable IF frequency. The transceiver includes a switch array capable of switching the up conversion path to either the upper band port or the lower band port of a diplexer and the switch array also switches the upper band port and lower band port of the diplexer to the down conversion path depending on whether the transceiver is operating in TDD mode or FDD mode. Also, if in TDD mode, the switch array determines whether the transceiver is transmitting or receiving.

Means for receiving r.f. signals for a given call include a plurality of receive amplifiers (62; FIG. 6a) one for each beam of an antenna array, means for combining the outputs of the plurality of receive amplifiers, switching means for applying the combined receive signals to the r.f. transceiver handling the given call; and a single power amplifier (52; FIG. 6a) for transmitting r.f. signals for the given call for applying the transceiver transmit signal to an individual one of the beams.

Means are provided for splitting (58; FIGS. 14b,14c) the transmission output of a given transceiver into two signals prior to transmission power amplification and transmitting said signals in two adjacent narrow overlapping beams.

An antenna for a base station comprising a plurality of antenna arrays (40; FIG. 6a) each capable of forming a multiplicity of separate overlapping narrow beams in azimuth, the arrays being positioned such that the of beams formed by the arrays provide a coverage in azimuth wider than each array. Means are provided for recognizing unique identifier signals (70; FIG. 6b) incorporated in call signals passing through the antenna; and coherent detection means for discriminating between unwanted call signals and wanted call signals using said unique identifier signals.

A smart antenna for a base station comprises a plurality of antenna arrays each capable of forming a multiplicity of separate overlapping narrow beams in azimuth, the arrays being positioned such that the totality of beams formed by the arrays provides a substantially omni-directional coverage in azimuth A plurality of r.f. transceivers is provided each for transmitting and receiving r.f. signals for one or more calls, with switching matrix means for connecting each transceiver with one or other of the arrays via beamformers. Each transceiver is connected by a switch matrix to a particular array to exchange r.f. signals with a remote station located in the area covered by one of the narrow overlapping beams. Means are provided for selecting for a given call more than one of the best received signals from the multiplicity of narrow overlapping beams and the selected signals are combined to form a single receive signal input for the r.f. transceiver for the given call.

An antenna for a base station comprising a plurality of antenna arrays (40; FIG. 6a) each capable of forming a multiplicity of separate overlapping narrow beams in azimuth, the arrays being positioned such that the of beams formed by the arrays provide a coverage in azimuth wider than each array. Means (54; FIG. 6a) are provided for independent adjustment of receiver gain and/or transmitter radiated power level of individual beams.

An antenna for a base station comprising a plurality of antenna arrays (40; FIG. 6a) each capable of forming a multiplicity of separate overlapping narrow beams in azimuth, the arrays being positioned such that the beams formed by the arrays provide a coverage in azimuth wider than each array. Means are provided for operating (FIG. 12a, FIG. 12b) two or more non-collocated narrow beamwidth antenna arrays to form jointly a broad beamwidth antenna radiation pattern wherein the time averaged antenna pattern is substantially null free.
