A system and method for implementing an efficient and easy to user interface for a touch screen device. A cursor may be placed by a user using simple inputs. The device operates places the cursor coarsely and refines the cursor placement upon further input from the user. Text may be selected using a gripper associated with the cursor. The user interface allows text selection without occluding the text being selected with the user's finger or the gripper. For selecting text in a multi-line block of text, a dynamic safety zone is implemented to simplify text selection for the user.

Determining and applying format attributes associated with content in an electronic document that is cut or copied from an electronic document and pasted into the same or different electronic document. The determination may be based on the format attributes of the content within a region of an electronic document containing the cut or copied content and the format attributes of a region of content that includes the location where the cut or copied text may be pasted. Local formatting may be associated with the source region of content and the destination region of content. Direct, or emphasis formatting, may be associated with content that has been cut or copied.

Method and system for deriving and matching local formatting in an electronic document

Alignment and positioning of tabs in text-based applications is provided by dynamically positioning the tabs based on content, margins, page size, and indents. Tab positions are aligned relative to a size, at least one margin, or content of a document or text-containing object such as a text box. Tab positions may also be aligned relative to an indent of a paragraph or of multiple columns on the same page. Alignment properties of tab positions are carried over when text is moved to table columns or other text-containing objects. Column-like grouping of text of varying size and alignments is enabled by using multiple tabs in a single line.

Dynamic positioning and aligning tabs relative to margins indent and column width

Methods and systems are provided for automatically adjusting printing settings to optimize the fit of text, data and/or images on printed pages. Once selected text or data is designated for printing, a determination is made as to whether the selected text or data may be printed on a single page or whether multiple pages are required. The best fit of the text or data on a single or multiple pages is accomplished by incrementally adjusting a number of different print settings until an optimum fit of the text or data is achieved on a single page or on a set of pages. Print settings include margins, scale, and orientation.

Optimizing the printing of data on a page

A method and system are provided for automatically sizing computer-generated workspaces to allow users to enter data anywhere in an available workspace. A calculation is performed to determine the total available workspace displayable by a display device based on the size of the display device. The space required to display user interface objects, such as toolbars and task panes, is subtracted from the total available workspace, and the remaining available workspace is designated as the displayed workspace. The workspace is displayed without the use of scroll bars to create a user experience that the displayed workspace is the total available workspace. Data may be entered anywhere in the displayed workspace without regard to any preformatted page sizes or margins. If data is entered outside the displayed workspace, scroll bars are then displayed to indicate the presence of content outside the displayed workspace. As additional content, such as graphical user interfaces is displayed, or when the user's display device changes, the displayed workspace is recalculated.

Automatically sized computer-generated workspaces

A user interface control is provided for navigating, selecting, and organizing document pages. The user interface control includes page tabs corresponding to document pages within an electronic document. The page tabs are organized and displayed adjacent to one another in a horizontal or vertical column. When any page tab is selected, such as with a mouse or keyboard, the document page corresponding to the selected page tab is displayed. A first page tab may be selected and a second page tab may be subsequently selected, such as for instance using a mouse or other pointing device. The selection may include dragging a mouse cursor from the first page tab across several page tabs and subsequently to the second page tab. When such a selection is received, the control displays the contents of each of the document pages corresponding to page tabs between the first and second page tabs. The user interface control may also include next page tabs displayed at either end of the column of page tabs or a new page tab displayed at either end of the column of page tabs. Page tabs may also be selected and moved to a new position between other page tabs.

User interface control for navigating, selecting, and organizing document pages

Described is a mechanism for pasting data from a source document into a destination document while providing the user with options related to the particular data being pasted. The options allow the user to choose how much formatting or structure to persist. More specifically, the user may select whether to persist general formatting, direct formatting, and/or outline structure through the paste operation.

System and method for converting between text format and outline format

A method and system are provided for inserting an object in a void region in an existing object. A user locates the void region by determining whether the insertion point for the object is outside of an edit region. If the insertion point is outside of the edit region, the user is in a void region. The user then inserts the object in the void region. The size of the void region dynamically changes based on the size of the inserted object. The object may be inserted using a computer keyboard or a pen. The inserted object may be text, ink, or any other type of object.

Method and system for utilizing void regions in computer-generated areas of text

Displaying a writing guide for a free-form document editor by detecting electronic ink, classifying the detected ink as corresponding to handwriting or a drawing, and displaying a handwriting guide or a drawing guide in response to classifying the detected ink as handwriting or a drawing, respectively. The writing guides can provide feedback regarding the classification of the detected ink and can be resized as additional ink is detected. The handwriting guide can comprise a writing area, writing guide portion, bullet guide, indent marker, character notches, gesture guide, or sacrificial guide to create meaningful structure within an outline object of an electronic document.

A method and system can format objects on a first page of an electronic document being created by applying the formatting from corresponding objects contained in a separate formatting source where these objects have been formatted using the existing tools of the application. In this way, when a page is created that has formatting information that is preferred by a user, subsequent pages can be created by referring to the page that has the preferred formatting information.

System and method for formatting objects on a page of an electronic document by reference

A method and system are provided for performing actions on content in a region within a free form two-dimensional workspace. In a computer software application, a region is defined within the workspace, an action is associated with the region, content is received within the region, and an action is performed on the content in the region. The region may be defined by generating an outline object to define a region within the workspace. An action may be associated with the region by selecting an action from a list of actions to associate with the region. The actions performed may be handwriting recognition, adding data to a contacts list, adding data to a task list, and identifying a recognizer for the content. The actions may also include editing data entered in a region.

Method and system for performing actions on content in a region within a free form two-dimensional workspace

Grouping pages of an electronic document into a series and displaying a title area for that series. The title area on the viewable area of a display screen whenever a page within a page grouping is displayed. The title area may contain editable document objects accessible while viewing any page in the page group. Some of these document objects may contain information derived from other computer programs, such as a scheduling program and information may be automatically placed into these document objects. The format of the title area may be customized and the entire title area may be hidden from view. Also, pages may be moved from one page group to another. These moved pages may be associated with the title area of the new page group, with the title area of the original page group inserted into the page as a document object.

Method and system for displaying a title area for a page series

The present invention is directed at a simplified system and method for manipulating data in a data processing application. The system and method allow the user to manipulate data in a table-like manner without resorting to other data entry screens or windows to define a table-like structure. Rather, the table-like structure is defined by interactively monitoring inputs received from a user. For example, if a user enters a tab following data on a same line, the present invention will manipulate that data as two columns of information. Thus, without performing additional tasks tangential to inputting data, the user is provided with table-like features, such as wrapping text, adjusting column width, and the like. In another embodiment, the table-like structure is determined by scanning contiguous lines for lines with identical horizontal alignment in relation to a first line.
