The disclosure relates to polymer-containing composite materials and to unusually low-pressure consolidation methods for forming composite parts from such materials. More specifically, for example, the disclosure relates to use of a certain 'PEEK-PEDEK' copolymer in low-pressure consolidation methods, using as little as 1 bar pressure (or using atmospheric pressure acting on a consolidation that is held under vacuum) to provide composite parts that are substantially void-free.

Polymeric materials

An insulated conductor has an elongate conductor provided with an insulating layer which comprises a polymeric material. The polymeric material has a crystallinity of at least 25% and includes a repeat unit of general formula wherein t1 and w1 independently represent 0 or 1 and v1 represents 0, 1 or 2. The insulating layer has a thickness in the range 2 &#x3bc;m-300 &#x3bc;m.

Insulated conductors

Method of purifying a polymeric material of a type which includes (A) phenyl moieties; (B) carbonyl and/or sulphone moieties; and; (C) ether and/or thioether moieties. The method includes contacting the polymeric material with a solvent formulation which is at a temperature of greater than 100&#xb0; C. and a pressure above ambient pressure thereby to charge the solvent formulation with impurities derived from the polymeric material, and separating the charged solvent from the polymeric material.

Polyketones

In order to provide wider biaxially-stretched geogrids having high primary direction (PD) strength, crotch-forming zones of a starting material which is at least 2.0 mm thick have protuberances ( ). On strectching, PD orientation passes right through the junction ( ) but the protuberance ( ) causes the orientation ratio of the crotch edge to decrease significiantly as orientation enters the central part of the crotch edge. After a secondary direction stretch of at least about 1.5:1, the thickness of the central part of the crotch edge is not reduced by more than about 20%. The stretching does not reduce the thickness of any point along notional ridge lines ( ) to such an extent that the ratio of finished thickness to starting thickness at that point mid-point. In the biax geogrid ( ), the junction mid-point is significantly thicker than the PD is less than about 80% of the ratio of finished thickness to starting thickness of the junction strand mid-point. The thickest part of the crotch is greater than about 80% of the thickness of the mid-point of the junction ( ). The junction ( ) has a generally square or rectangular central zone with narrow projections ( ) at the corners extending outwards to the crotch edges.
