A method of manufacturing a doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device includes mixing a plurality of transition metal complexes and a plurality of rare-earth metal complexes to form a metal salt solution, heating the metal salt solution to form a heated metal salt solution, mixing the heated metal salt solution and an organic precursor to induce a chemical reaction between the heated metal salt solution and the organic precursor to produce a plurality of rare-earth doped crystalline nanoparticles, and sintering the plurality of rare-earth doped nanoparticles to form a doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device having a rare-earth element dopant that is uniformly distributed within a crystal lattice of the doped polycrystalline ceramic optical device.

Glass articles and methods for modifying a composition of a surface portion of the glass article are disclosed. The method includes heating the surface portion of the glass article with a laser beam to a temperature within a range of about 1100?C to about 2200?C such that the heating evaporates one or more metalloids and/or one or more alkali metals present at the surface portion, and modifies the composition of the surface portion such that the surface portion has a lower alkali metals concentration and/or a lower metalloids concentration as compared to a portion of the glass article that is not heated by the laser beam.

The rare-earth element dopant is configured to absorb a storage photon traversing the chalcogenide optical fiber link upon receipt of a first pump pulse output by the pump laser. Further, the rare-earth element dopant is configured to release the storage photon upon receipt of a second pump pulse output by the pump laser.

A quantum key generation system including two photon detector units, two photon entanglement chains extending between the two photon detector units, and a plurality of multicore fiber links each including at least two non-uniform cores structurally configured to provide non-uniform photon propagation delay. Each photon entanglement chain includes at least one quantum repeater structurally configured to entangle a pair of photons and first and second terminating quantum memories optically coupled the quantum repeater using the multicore fiber links such that photons received by the first and the second terminating quantum memories are entangled with photons entangled by the quantum repeater. The first and second terminating quantum memories of each of the two photon entanglement chains form first and second cross-chain quantum repeaters, and the first and the second photon detector units are structurally configured to receive the measurable entangled particles generated by the first and second cross-chain quantum repeaters, respectively.

Photodarkening resistant optical fiber lasing media and fiber lasers incorporating the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical fiber lasing medium includes a core portion formed from silica-based glass comprising a rare-earth dopant and deuterium, the core portion having an index of refraction n, a numerical aperture NA. A concentration of defect color centers in the core portion is less than 1&#xd7;10/cm. Deuterium is combined with the defect color centers to form reacted defect color centers that do not absorb ultraviolet and visible wavelengths of light. A first cladding portion is formed from silica-based glass, the first cladding portion surrounding and directly contacting the core portion and having an index of refraction n, wherein the index of refraction nof the first cladding portion is less than the index of refraction nof the core portion. Methods of forming the photodarkening resistant optical fiber lasing media are also disclosed.

Polarization maintaining and single polarization optical fiber

The strain-managed optical waveguide assemblies of the present invention utilize a large-mode-area (LMA) optical fiber that is annealed in a first bending such that the fiber in that configuration has substantially no axial strain. A fiber support member is then used to support the annealed LMA optical fiber in a second bending configuration that forms within the LMA optical fiber an axial strain profile that reduces stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) as compared to the first bending configuration, and that also preferably causes the LMA optical fiber to operate in a single mode. The LMA optical fiber may have a double-clad configuration and include a doped core that serves as a gain medium. The strain-managed optical waveguide assembly can then be used to constitute a fiber amplifier that mitigates the SBS penalty associated with high-power fiber-based optical systems. The strain-managed waveguide assembly can also provide for thermal management in high-power applications, and can be used to control SBS by controlling the temperature profile along the length of the LMA optical fiber in a manner that mitigates SBS.
