Sugar-based mono and diesters are prepared by esterification of 2,5-furan-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with an alcohol in the presence of low loadings of a homogeneous organotin (IV) catalyst.

A method for preparing sugar-based mono and diesters is described. The process entails the esterification of 2,5-furan-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with an alcohol in the presence of low loadings of a homogeneous organotin (IV) catalyst.

Furfural is produced by contacting a feedstock solution containing Csugar and/or Csugar with a solid acid catalyst using reactive distillation. Both high yield and high conversion are obtained, without production of insoluble char in the reaction vessel. Degradation of furfural is minimized by its low residence time in contact with the solid acid catalyst. Higher catalyst lifetime can be achieved because the catalyst is continually washed with the refluxing aqueous solution and not sitting in high-boiling byproducts like humins, which are known to be deleterious to catalyst lifetime.

Process for the production of furfural

A process for forming a pouch having an evacuated headspace containing a flowable material is disclosed. The process includes the steps of: providing a continuous tube of flexible and sealable film; supplying the continuous tube with a predetermined amount of flowable material; pinching the continuous tube above a sealing region so as to form a pinched portion of the continuous tube; evacuating the headspace between the pinched portion and the predetermined amount of flowable material; and sealing the continuous tube at the sealing region to form a top seal of a previously formed pouch containing flowable material and a bottom seal of a next-to-be filled pouch. Also disclosed is a vertical form-fill-seal apparatus for forming a pouch containing a flowable material and having an evacuated headspace.
