A communication system that uses dual base station frame boundaries is provided. A base station is in communication with a core network of at least one service provider and user equipment. The base station includes a circuitry that is configured to set a UL physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) time frame boundary in alignment with a downlink (DL) PDSCH time frame boundary, process PUSCH communication signals in the PUSCH using the UL PUSCH time frame boundary, set an UL random access channel (RACH) time frame boundary at a select delay from an associated RACH time frame boundary within a UL PUSCH time frame, process RACH communication signals using the delayed UL RACH time frame boundary, and provide a timing advance command to a UE that communicated a UL RACH communication signal that accounts for a round trip latency in a fronthaul network connecting the base station and radio units.

Dual base station frame boundaries

One embodiment is directed to a system to provide wireless service comprising a base band unit and a plurality of antennas communicatively coupled to the base band unit. The system is configured for frequency reuse implemented via the plurality of antennas in order to transmit to subsets of the UEs. The UEs included in each subset are transmitted respectively different data using the same resource elements. The system is configured to collect base station data including Channel Quality Information (CQI) data, Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) data, and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) acknowledgement/negative acknowledgement (ACK/NACK) data for the plurality of UEs. The system is configured to use the base station data to determine candidate UEs for transmission to using frequency reuse and to determine modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) for the UEs transmitted to using frequency reuse.

Dynamic downlink reuse in a C-RAN

Techniques are described for avoiding contention between synchronization packets (for example, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) synchronization packets) and in-phase and quadrature (IQ) packets communicated over a fronthaul network used in a radio access network (for example, a Fifth Generation (5G) radio access network).

Avoiding contention between synchronization packets and in-phase and quadrature (IQ) packets communicated over fronthaul of a radio access network

Orthogonal DMRS ports with resource block reuse in a single cell is provided. ABS comprises: a BBE and RUs. The BS transmits user data to each of a plurality of UEs on a PDSCH using a PRB allocation for the cell. The PRB and cell are the same for all UEs. The PRB comprises DMRS symbols. The BS transmits user data to each UE on the PDSCH using a respective non-intersecting subset of the RUs. No RU transmits user data on the PDSCH using the PRB to more than one UE. The BBE: determines non-intersecting sets of DMRS ports; assigns one set to each UE; and causes the BS to transmit UE-specific DMRS to UE on the DMRS ports in the set assigned to that UE using only a respective non-intersecting subset of RUs used for transmitting user data to that UE on the PDSCH using the PRB.

Systems and methods for using orthogonal demodulation reference signal ports with resource block reuse in a single cell

Embodiment are directed to systems and methods for use with a central radio access network (C-RAN) comprising a plurality of controllers and a plurality of radio points. Each of the controllers is configured to determine if that controller should serve as a timing master for the controllers and the radio points and, if that controller should serve as the timing master, synchronize the local clock of that controller with a master clock source over a backhaul network and transmit synchronization messages from that controller over a fronthaul network for reception by the other controllers and the radio points and for use by the other controllers and the radio points in synchronizing the local clocks thereof with the local clock of that controller. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Clock synchronization in a centralized radio access network having multiple controllers

One embodiment is directed to a communication system comprising a remote unit comprising a remote unit local clock and a controller communicatively coupled to the remote unit using a switched Ethernet network. The remote unit is configured to synchronize the remote unit local clock to a reference timing source using timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the remote unit. The communication system is configured to transmit the timing messages and baseband data so as to reduce a level of contention encountered by the timing messages in connection with being communicated over the switched Ethernet network.

Radio access networks

An example communication system includes remote units to exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices, RF signals comprising information destined for, or originating from, a mobile device, the remote units performing at least some physical layer processing for an air interface used by the remote units to communicate with the mobile device. The communication system also includes two or more controllers comprising real-time schedulers for assigning airlink resources to the mobile device for the information. The communication system also includes a coordination function coupled to the two or more controllers to coordinate assignments made by the real-time schedulers in the two or more controllers.

One embodiment is directed to determining a composite precoder for transmitting to a UE using a group of one or more of the radio units by doing the following: for each of a plurality of subsets of the radio units, transmitting separate reference signals from the different antennas of only the radio units included in that subset; receiving subset-specific preferred precoder index reports from the UE for at least each individual radio unit included in the group of one or more of the radio units; determining the composite precoder for the UE using the subset-specific preferred precoder index reports from the UE for at least the one or more radio units included in the group; and using the composite precoder for transmitting to the UE using the one or more radio units included in the group. In some embodiments, each of the subsets includes less than all of the radio units.

Precoder feedback information scheme for downlink colocated multiple input multiple output (MIMO) or distributed MIMO

A communication system for statically allocating physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) resources on a PUCCH. The communication system includes a base station configured to exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with a plurality of user equipment terminals (UEs). The base station is also configured to identify two PUCCH resources, each sharing the same orthogonal code sequence and located in different resource block of adjacent slots of a subframe. The base station is also configured to statically allocate the two PUCCH resources to two of the UEs, where both UEs are legacy UEs or Category-M1 (Cat-M1) UEs.

Spectrum-efficient utilization of an uplink control channel

This disclosure is directed to various ways to dynamically manage the subset of radio points that are used to transmit to user equipment in a C-RAN.

One embodiment is directed to a method of using variable-resolution quantization to front-haul at least some data over a front-haul network in a system configured to provide wireless service to user equipment. The method comprises, for each symbol position, determining a respective number of required resource blocks having respective actual user-equipment (UE) signal data to front-haul for each carrier and determining the number of high-resolution resource blocks that can be quantized at a higher resolution as a function of a difference between a nominal per-symbol-position front-haul link capacity and a link capacity needed to front-haul the required resource blocks for all of the carriers if quantized using a lower resolution. The method further comprises, for each symbol position, allocating the high-resolution resource blocks to each carrier and determining, for each carrier, which of the required resource blocks to quantize at the higher resolution. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Front-haul rate reduction for use in a centralized radio access network

In one embodiment, a local clock is synchronized to a master clock using a Kalman filter to determine state variables using a state transition matrix that includes at least one coefficient that is associated with a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), where the state variables include a unit step variable indicative of a unit step for the system. The local clock is controlled based on the state variables determined using the Kalman filter. The unit step is indicative of an amount by which the frequency of the local clock signal changes in response to a change in the digital input of the DAC.

State estimation for time synchronization

Among other things, a communication system comprising remote units, a reference timing source, a controller, a controller clock, and a remote unit clock. The remote units exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices. The reference timing source is synchronized with a coordinated universal time (UTC) or a Global Positioning System (GPS). The controller clock is synchronized with the reference timing source and provides timing information to the controller. The remote unit clock is synchronized with the controller clock and provides timing information to a remote unit. The controller and the remote unit are configured to transmit time stamp messages to synchronize the controller clock and the remote unit clock, by avoiding contention between time stamp transmissions and baseband data transmissions or between time stamp transmissions of different remote units to the controller.
