A VM concentrate comprising: from about 60 to about 95 parts (and at least 50 wt %) of a diluent oil (e.g., having a KV100 of about 2 cSt to about 40 cSt); and from about 5 parts to about 40 parts (and at least 6.0 wt %) of a linear triblock copolymer characterized by the formula: D'-PA-D&#x2033;; wherein D&#x2032; represents a block derived from diene, PA represents a block derived from monoalkenyl arene, D&#x2033; represents a block derived from diene, and the linear triblock copolymer is present in an amount effective to modify a lubricating kinematic viscosity at approximately 100&#xb0; C. (KV100) of the concentrate, and wherein the KV100 of the concentrate is about 3000 cSt or less. The linear triblock copolymer may additionally or alternatively have a thickening efficiency span of at most 0.5.

Triblock copolymer concentrates for lubricating oil compositions

Concentrates of linear, block copolymers having a polymer block derived from a monoalkenyl arene, covalently linked to one or more blocks of a hydrogenated derivative of a conjugated diene copolymer, dissolved in highly saturated diluent oil, wherein the size of the monoalkenyl arene block is controlled to provide an optimized level of incompatibility of the block copolymer in the selected diluent.

Viscosity index improver concentrates for lubricating oil compositions

A viscosity index improver containing, in non-ester diluent oil, one or more hydrogenated, functionalized linear block copolymers having at least one block derived from monoalkenyl arene covalently linked to at least one block derived from diene in an amount that is greater than the critical overlap concentration (c*), in mass %, for the linear block copolymers in the diluent oil; and an amount of ester base stock.

Viscosity index improver concentrates

A viscosity index improver containing, in diluent oil, one or more optionally functionalized linear block copolymers having at least one block derived from alkenyl arene covalently linked to at least one block derived from diene in an amount that is greater than the critical overlap concentration (c*), in mass %, for the linear block copolymers in the diluent oil; and ester base stock and/or at least one star (or radial) polymer, the star polymer being present in an amount such that the c/c* value of the star polymer in the concentrate falls within the range of from 0.01 to about 1.6, wherein c is the concentration in mass % of star polymer in the concentrate and c* is the critical overlap concentration in mass % for the star polymer in the diluent oil used to form the concentrate.

Polymers suitable for use as a viscosity index improver for lubricating oil compositions including linear polymers characterized by the formula:D'-PA-D&#x2033;;and star polymers characterized by the formula:(D&#x2032;-PA-D&#x2033;)-X;wherein D&#x2032; represents an 'outer' block derived from diene having a number average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 120,000 daltons; PA represents a block derived from monoalkenyl arene having a number average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 50,000 daltons; D&#x2033; represents an inner random derived from diene having a number average molecular weight of from about 5,000 to about 60,000 daltons; n represents the average number of arms per star polymer formed by the reaction of 2 or more moles of a polyalkenyl coupling agent per mole of arms; and X represents a nucleus of a polyalkenyl coupling agent.

Viscosity index improvers for lubricating oil compositions

A lubricating oil composition formulated with a viscosity index (VI) improver composition including a combination of an ethylene &#x3b1;-olefin copolymer having no greater than 66 mass % of units derived from ethylene, and a linear diblock copolymer including at least one block derived primarily from a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer, and at least one block derived primarily from diene monomer.

Lubricating oil compositions

A polymer suitable for use as a viscosity index improver for lubricating oil compositions, which is at least one, at least partially hydrogenated linear or star-shaped random copolymer of isoprene and butadiene, in which at least 70 wt. % of the butadiene is incorporated into the polymer as 1,4 units and the weight ratio of isoprene addition product to butadiene addition product in the copolymer is in a range of from about 90:10 to about 70:30.
