A process for applying an interface coating includes the step of applying an interface coating material upon at least one surface of a fiber-based substrate. The interface coating material may be composed of a sizing agent, a ceramic powder and optionally at least one of the following agents: a dispersing agent, a deflocculating agent or a surface wetting agent.

Process for applying interface coatings and manufacturing composite materials using same

A nozzle for use in a cold spray technique is described. The nozzle has a passageway for spraying a powder material, the passageway having a converging section and a diverging section, and at least the diverging section being formed from polybenzimidazole. In one embodiment of the nozzle, the converging section is also formed from polybenzimidazole.

Putty-like gap-filling compounds for insulation that can be utilized at temperatures from about &#x2212;420&#xb0; F. (&#x2212;250&#xb0; C.) up to about 500&#xb0; F. (260&#xb0; C.) are described herein. Embodiments of these compounds contain about 25-50 volume percent base material, about 50-75 volume percent microspheres, and about 0.1-0.3 volume percent catalyst. Embodiments of these compounds contain about 70-80 weight percent base material, about 20-30 weight percent microspheres, and about 0.1-0.5 weight percent catalyst.

Cryogenic insulation

An air seal for use in a gas turbine engine provides improved durability, particularly at higher temperatures. The seal includes a seal substrate and an abradable seal layer on the substrate. The abradable seal layer is composed of a densified polyimide foam, preferably a thermomechanically densified foam. The seal is bonded to a stationary engine component such as a stator box or a case.

The present invention relates to a process for inspecting a part to detect defects in the part. The process comprises the steps of placing a part to be inspected in an immersion tank, introducing a mixture of a penetrant dye and a supercritical carbon dioxide solvent into the immersion tank, maintaining the part immersed in the mixture for a time sufficient for the penetrant dye to penetrate any defects in the part, removing the part from the immersion tank, and inspecting the part for the presence of any defects. A system for carrying out the process is also described.

An air seal for use in a gas turbine engine is disclosed. The seal includes a seal substrate, and an abradable layer on the substrate, with the abradable including a thermoset polymer and a thermoplastic polymer. The abradable may also include a filler to add porosity, or provide lubrication, to enhance abradability.

Stator vanes located between compressor stages in a gas turbine engine are fabricated with a composite outer shell made of graphite fibers in an epoxy binder that is laid-up over a core of felt-like material selected to have an elongation velocity that is greater than the elongation velocity of the shell.

A method for preparing a metal matrix composite (MMC) monotape from a monofilament, is provided. The monofilament is first coated with a primary coating having metal particles uniformly distributed therein to form a primary monofilament. The primary monofilament is then clad with a secondary coating of a resin binder that does not resolvate the primary coating and thus interrupt the distribution of the metal particles therein, to form a doubly coated monofilament. The doubly coated monofilament is then wound in adjacent coils on a mandrel while the secondary coating is still wet so that the coils are bound together by the secondary coating. The end of the monofilament is then cut on the mandrel and secured to a coil adjacent thereto and the so-wound monofilament is then dried on the mandrel. Then the so-wound secondary monofilament is cut across its coils on the mandrel and removed to obtain the resulting MMC monotape. In another embodiment, two or more of the MMC monotapes can be overlayed and adhered together to form a composite part. The invention thus provides a method for preparing the above monotape in one or more layers and the product resulting from such method.
