The present invention relates to a health monitoring system comprising an implantable sensor configured to measure impedance within a body tissue of the subject resulting from an electrical current flowing through said body tissue, wherein the body tissue is sub-dermal or subcutaneous tissue of said subject, the sensor including a powering and communication circuit having a coil configured to be powered by an electromagnetic field and to communicate with external devices. Further, the system comprises a reader module including a coil configured to produce the electromagnetic field for powering the powering and communication circuit and for communicating with the powering and communication circuit, a computing device comprising a display device, a processing device and at least one storage device, the computing device being configured to communicate with other devices via at least one wireless network and a monitoring engine for determining or monitoring at least one physiological parameter based on measured impedance, wherein the reader module and the computing device and the monitoring engine are configured to communicate with each other.

A method and an apparatus for measuring glucose level in the body fluid of a subject, typically blood glucose level, by measuring impedance of a body tissue, with two pairs of electrodes, two electrodes for injecting current into a body tissue and two electrodes for detecting the ensuing voltage of the body tissue. The body tissue is typically a sub-dermal or sub-cutaneous tissue. The measured impedance of the body tissue is used to correlate with directly determined glucose levels to determine the glucose level from the measured impedance. It is thus possible to determine body fluid glucose levels in a reliable and reproducible manner.

A non-invasive method of monitoring a biological parameter concerning a bodily fluid of a subject, e.g., blood glucose of a human subject. The method includes: placing an electrode against a site of the skin of the subject; measuring impedance of the skin and determining the parameter therefrom; and using substantially the same site in another determination. Another non-invasive monitoring method includes: exposing a skin site to an aqueous salt solution for a pre-determined first period of time; removing excess of the solution from the site; measuring impedance at the site; exposing the site to the solution for a pre-determined second period of time and repeating the removing and measuring steps. It is determined whether the impedance measured falls within a pre-determined range. The latter exposure and removal steps are repeated, if necessary, until two consecutive impedance measurements within the pre-determined range are obtained.
