Provided are methods and apparatuses for controlling a position of a target point on a processing result relative to a focus point of a focusing sensor system for determining properties of the processing result. The method includes the steps of determining an initial focus point of the focusing sensor system, controlling rotation of the cartridge and disc, checking whether the initial focus point of the focusing sensor system corresponds to the target point on the processing result, comparing (x, y) target positions in captured images with the initial focus point of the focusing sensor system, adjusting rotation of the cartridge and disc such that the focus point of the focusing sensor system corresponds to the target point on the processing result, and detecting and examining signals received from the focusing sensor system for determining properties of the processing result.

Method and apparatus for controlling a focus point of a stationary beam focusing on a sample in a rotating cartridge placed in a rotating disc

Provided is a centrifuge apparatus for a processing cartridge, including a rotary plate and at least one cartridge holder, and the cartridge holder is rotatable around its centre axis and arranged off-centre the centre axis of the rotary plate and comprises an inner side wall surrounding a through-going passage, wherein the through-going passage is able to accommodate the processing cartridge; and the inner side wall includes a resilient locking assembly for interaction with at least one cooperating first abutting surface on the processing cartridge, such that the processing cartridge may be inserted into the through-going passage and releasably secured by the locking assembly; and at least one stopping element for interaction with at least one cooperating second abutting surface on the processing cartridge, the at least one stopping element being arranged to retain the processing cartridge at a desired vertical level when the cartridge is releasably secured.

Centrifuge apparatus for a processing cartridge having a rotary plate and a stopping element

Provided herein is technology relating to methods for assaying a cell-containing body sample and particularly, but not exclusively, to treating a sample under conditions to cause cell lysis, preferably by means of a detergent; and subjecting the lysed sample to conditions causing the cleavage of nucleic acid molecules. The technology additionally relates to using nucleic acid cleavage conditions to enhance a membrane assay, a device for carrying out such an assay, and a kit for use in the assay.

Membrane assay method

The present invention provides a method of analyzing a sample containing an analyte to be qualitatively and/or quantitatively determined, comprising a binding step and a washing step, wherein the binding step comprises: interacting the analyte with beads having a density m; obtaining a structure of packed beads comprising quantifiable bead complexes having a density m; and the washing step comprises: dispersing the packed beads in a liquid medium having a density d&#x3e;mand m; and separating the liquid medium and the beads comprising the quantifiable bead complexes.

Analytical method

A method for transferring beads in a fluidic chip having an internal fluid circuit through which various reactants, including beads, may be moved by use of centrifugal force includes providing beads having a density equal to, or lower than, m1 in a section of the fluid circuit, where the section includes at least a first outlet. The method includes providing a first liquid medium having a density d2 to the section, such that d2&#x3e;m1, and applying a centrifugal force such that the beads migrate in an opposite direction of the centrifugal force.

A sample processing cartridge for carrying out processing under centrifugal force acting in at least two directions as the orientation of cartridge relative to centrifugal force is changed, the cartridge comprising: a first cavity adapted to contain a sample; and a second cavity in fluid communication with the first cavity, wherein the first and second cavities are arranged such that the sample in the first cavity is moved therefrom to the second cavity as a centrifugal force acting on the cartridge is changed from a first direction to a second direction, the first cavity is elongated perpendicular to the centrifugal force acting in the first direction, and the second cavity is more shallow than the first cavity and more extended in the direction of the centrifugal force acting in the second direction than the first cavity is extended in the direction of the centrifugal force acting in the first direction.

Sample processing cartridge and method of processing and/or analysing a sample under centrifugal force

An assay apparatus comprising: i) an assay cartridge () comprising at least one well (-) and a pipette () positionable in at least one said well; ii) a holder arranged to received said cartridge; iii) drive means operable to position said pipette in selected wells of said cartridge; iv) a gas pressure applicator couplable to said pipette whereby to cause liquid flow through said membrane; and v) a radiation detector operable to detect radiation from a well of said cartridge of said cartridge or from said pipette.

Assay system

This invention relates to an optical sensor element comprising a photonic crystal constituted by a membrane of a chosen transparent material, the membrane being provided with a number of defined openings in a chosen pattern, the pattern being adapted to provide resonance at a chosen wavelength or range of wavelengths, wherein said openings are provided with a reactive material acting as a receptor for a chosen type of molecules, e.g. proteins, the presence of which alters the resonance and/or scattering conditions in the sensor element thus altering the amount of light propagating out of the membrane plane.
