A cutting tool ( ) includes a front part ( ), which has a cutting insert ( ), as well as a rear part ( ), which is detachably mountable in a holder ( ) in an appurtenant machine. The tool ( ) comprises a plurality of nozzles ( ), which have the purpose of spraying jets ( ) of high pressure cooling liquid towards the cutting insert ( ). Supply of cooling liquid to these nozzles is guaranteed via a duct system positioned inside the tool, which system includes an equally large number of mutually spaced-apart ducts as the number of nozzles, the nozzles being adjusted in order to direct the jets thereof towards different points of impact on one and the same cutting insert. In this connection, it is possible to close the individual ducts inside the tool individually in order to enable spraying of only one jet at a time towards the appurtenant point of impact on the cutting insert.

The chip removing machining of a workpiece is performed by a cutting tool which includes a cutting insert. In order to cool the cutting insert, one or more over-cooling nozzles is arranged for directing a jet of cooling liquid downwardly toward a contact area between the workpiece and a chip surface of the cutting insert. A sub-cooling nozzle is arranged for directing a jet of cooling liquid upwardly toward a contact area between the workpiece and a flank surface of the cutting insert. A jet of cooling liquid can be emitted from only the over-cooling nozzle, or from only the sub-cooling nozzle, or from both of those nozzles simultaneously.

A metal workpiece is cut by rotating the workpiece while pressing the cutting edge of a cutting insert thereagainst for removing a chip from the workpiece. A first liquid jet is directed from a first nozzle toward an upper surface of the cutting insert for creating an hydraulic wedge between the cutting insert and the chip, and a second liquid jet is directed from a second nozzle toward a target point disposed above the upper surface of the cutting insert to engage and deflect the chip upwards and backwards.

A cutting insert for chipforming machine has a tip face with a cutting edge. Grooves are formed in the top face and extend toward the cutting edge. Chip-deflecting projections extend upwardly from the top face and are situated in spaces formed between adjacent grooves. A jet of cooling fluid is directed toward inner ends of the grooves and travels between the projections and within the grooves toward the cutting edge.

A cutting tool includes a nozzle for directing coolant toward an insert seat disposed in the tool. The nozzle includes a bore which directs coolant toward a location on the seat that is spaced from a center hole in which the nozzle is mounted. A rear end of the nozzle is pressed against a fixed surface of the tool by the pressure of coolant. The bore in the nozzle is in non-coinciding relationship relative to the axis of the hole in which the insert is mounted. The bore can be angled relative to axis of the hole, or the bore can be parallel to, but radially offset from, the axis of the hole.

A cutting insert is cooled during chip removing machining of a workpiece by conducting cooling medium through a porous supporting body of the insert. The cooling medium enters the insert through an inlet formed therein at a location remote from a cutting edge of the insert and exits the insert through an outlet formed in the insert at a location proximate the cutting edge. The discharged cooling medium impinges on, and cools, the workpiece.

A sealing plug is insertable into a rear end of a cutting shaft on which a cutting insert is mounted. The plug forms an internal passage for conducting cooling liquid to a center duct of the shaft. The plug includes a sleeve portion insertable into the duct, and a radial flange which supports an elastically flexible sealing member that can be removed. The sealing plug is capable of multiple uses, e.g., a first use wherein the cutting shaft is mounted within an adapter and the sealing member seals radially outwardly against a surface of the adapter, and a second use wherein the cutting shaft is mounted in an open-ended bore of a holder (i.e., no adapter is used), the sealing member is removed, and sealing is effected by a tight-fit of the sleeve portion within the duct of the cutting shaft. By removing the sealing member, the maximum outer diameter of the plug is reduced to facilitate movement of the cutting shaft through the bore of the holder.

A cutting body is formed of compacted powder and has a lower side provided with a recess and a spaced protrusion. The body can be used as a cutting insert, or two identical such bodies can be sintered together to form an invertible cutting insert. Voids can be formed within the insert to contain sensors or conduct cooling fluid.

A thread cutting insert comprises a block having along one edge thereof a plurality of teeth for successively cutting a thread in a workpiece. The teeth are of successively increasing heights from a first to a last of the teeth. The first tooth has a smoothly convexly curved cutting edge, and the remaining teeth have a multi-sided cutting edge defined by three sides of a trapezoid.

The invention relates to a tool preferably for turning, and an insert therefor. The tool comprises a shank (11) upon which a loop-shaped outer disc (12) is secured. An inner disc (13) is displaceably arranged between the arms of the outer disc (12). A screw (15) is arranged to push the inner disc (13) forwards relative to the outer disc during inward screwing, such that the fore ends of the inner disc force the lower face of the insert against the upper face of the shank (11). The insert (14) is provided with a hole which is arranged to be wedged up on a pin (36) extending in the hole during a forward movement of the insert at the same time as the pin and the hole comprise cooperating surfaces to force the lower face of the insert against the upper face of the shank.

An indexible insert is mounted on a shank. The insert includes angled centering surfaces which engage angled localizing surfaces on the shank. The insert includes abutment surfaces which engage support surfaces on the shank. The point of contact between the abutment and support surfaces is located farther from the working cutting edge than is the point of contact between the centering and localizing surfaces. Thus, when the working cutting edge is acted upon by a lateral force, the abutment and support surfaces bear against each other with a greater force than do the centering and localizing surfaces. Accordingly, less wear occurs at the centering surfaces.
